2.0 out of 5 stars Scientifically questionable
I found most of this book very infomative and useful but, unfortunately, part of this book a bit misleading. At p.8 and p.9, explaining correlation between telomere length of white blood cells and perceived stressed, it says:
"The enzyme telomerase restores the length of the telomeres when they get worn and replenishes a portion of the telomeres, allowing the cell...

This review is from: So Stressed: The Ultimate Stress-Relief Plan for Women (Hardcover)
Every now and then, a book comes along which delivers a simple yet important message in an oh-so-effective manner. This is one of those books. A must read for every hard-working woman out there. As a female and a professional, stress has been a constant in my life. In fact, its absence would come as more of a surprise than its presence -- despite various haphazard measures I've taken to counter stress. This books turns the subject on its head by giving women the tools they need to identify the type of stress in their lives -- aka your stress profile -- and by presenting them with affirmative steps to take to manage that stress. Almost all women like a game-plan. We like to be in charge of our lives. Finally, this book gives us a guide to doing so.

This book is a real life saver. I haven't finished it yet, but what I have read is a much needed reference to my crazy life. Although I recoginize as an individual person, recommendations in a book are of a general nature, I have choosen from the general recommendations for my type that most suit me and already feel more controlled and vital although the pressures and chaos of my life have not changed. I am excited to see what 6 months or a years time of these small changes will yield. Thank you Dr. McClellan and Dr. Hamilton from the bottom of my heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Practical Advice, January 19, 2010
This review is from: So Stressed: The Ultimate Stress-Relief Plan for Women (Hardcover)
I bought this book for my wife about two weeks ago. She's already read it. She had been complaining about stress for a while (a working mom, so it's natural, I guess). Apparently she's the "Hyper-S" type. Obviously, I can't speak from first person (because I didn't read it) but I can say that my wife has been raving about the book for the past week -- and how it's helped her already. So that benefit runs to me - now I'm the good guy instead of causing her stress!

Ignore those reviews below; they're clearly written by people with an agenda.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book - This Book is Going to Change My Life, January 11, 2010
This review is from: So Stressed: The Ultimate Stress-Relief Plan for Women (Hardcover)
I too discovered the doctors after reading an article on The Huffington Post and was very intrigued by their personalized approach for women to cope and relieve stress. I find that stress impacts many aspects of my life and when things get too stressful I tend to feel very overwhelmed. The diet, exercise and lifestyle tips that are clearly and thoughtfully organized throughout this book give me great hope that with this advice I can make a profound change in my life this year! Between the case studies, health tips and more general lifestyle advice I know that I will be able to take the wisdom of So Stressed and make daily positive improvements.

5.0 out of 5 stars SO BRILLIANT!, January 7, 2010
This review is from: So Stressed: The Ultimate Stress-Relief Plan for Women (Hardcover)
SO STRESSED is absolutely brilliant. I can't think of a day in recent memory when at least one colleague, friend or relative hasn't said, "Sherry--I feel so damn stressed!" Now, finally, two marvelous women doctors (and who else could have called it?) have pinpointed the probable causes of our erratic weight gains, headaches, digestion problems and other female unpleasantness that up till now, most doctors have told us came from lack of will- power or bad genetic footprints. These lovely doctors have not only diagnosed our major, chronic problems correctly as deriving from stress, stress and more stress but they offer a clear and intelligent plan for coping. I loved this orignial-thinking book; it's written with style and grace and wisdom and, never having met them, I still feel these doctors know me. SO STRESSED owns a permanent place on my book shelf and it's my new favorite gift to my favorite people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wisdom to help ourselves live more healthfully, January 20, 2010

This review is from: So Stressed: The Ultimate Stress-Relief Plan for Women (Hardcover)
This book is all about how our busy lives can affect our health...it reminds us that taking a minute for ourselves is not self-indulgent. The authors are giving us a wonderful tool: to take charge of our health now and also live in a way that protects our health for the future. There is wisdom to be found about how we can be our own health advocates.

Every woman is different and the book offers 4 "types" - one of which will resonate with you more than the others (though you'll probably see parts of youself in all of them). The authors give really helpful recommendations for how to sleep, eat, look and feel better based on your type. I found the ideas useful and straightforard.

I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Advices on how to deal with Stress., January 19, 2010
This review is from: So Stressed: The Ultimate Stress-Relief Plan for Women (Hardcover)
So Stressed is a great book, not too short and not too long. It is easy to understand. It shows me how to identify what kind of stress I have and what I can do to destress. I also watched the interview on Good Morning America and like it when Dr. McClellan mentioned that women are like "water" and we push ourself through the day. By doing so, we are accumulated so much stress. I think it is so true. I always feel fatigue and have back pain at the age of 29, I have my physical exam and everything was normal except my cortisol level. I noticed that I have greater back pain when I were preparing for my finals. In fact, I experienced absence of menstruation last month because I stressed and pushed myself through final exams. After I watched the show, I read the book and found some good advices on nutrition and exercise. I think this book is a good recommendation for everyday living. I am buying a few more books to give to my sister and friends as a special gift.

Dr. Hamilton and Dr. McClellan have been my doctors for years and I cannot count the number of friends and co-workers I have referred to them. They are not "just" gynecologists but are brilliant diagnosticians and true experts on overall women's health. As a lawyer and a mom to two children under the age of six, I have already benefitted from the stress-management techniques they have provided to me during my office visits. It came as no surprise that they were able to translate their years of research and experience into a fantastic book. I am so glad that they will now be able to help even more women through this book. My copy is already making its rounds among my circle of friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Both insightful and helpful, January 11, 2010
This review is from: So Stressed: The Ultimate Stress-Relief Plan for Women (Hardcover)
So Stressed gives great medical information in an exceptionally well written style. Complicated subjects like the HPA axis and the basics of the nervous system become both clear and relevant. It is an absolute must for everyone who wants to understand how the psychological becomes a strain or a disease for the body to manage. Since all of us modern women live with wanting to do too much, therefore stressing ourselves, this book could be a godsend of clear, positive advice. I love it that over half the book tells us how how to get out of the messes we create with both "quick fixes" and lifetyle changes.
