Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

PW praised Kitchen's "beautiful and scientifically accurate" illustrations, adding that "even adult artists and engineers will be inspired by the creativity and diversity of his subjects." Ages 4-up.

From Booklist

Gr. 3-5. In an intriguing thematic approach, noted illustrator Kitchen--Animal Alphabet (1984); Animal Numbers (1987)--examines 12 different animal builders and the design purposes behind each of their unique constructions. From satin bowerbirds to swallows, from cubiterme termites to harvest mice, the animals profiled vary from the exotic to the familiar. With each animal, Kitchen provides an information-laden paragraph or two about the animal's lifestyle and building activities on the left-hand page and an exquisitely detailed portrait of the animal and its construction within a natural landscape on the right-hand page (although the tiny termites are not readily visible in the painting of their large, umbrella-shaped nests). While it is disappointing that Kitchen fails to include either resource notes or a bibliography of suggested titles for further reading, this handsome picture book for older readers provides a fascinating glimpse of some of the architectural wonders to be found within the animal world and will be a welcome addition to most natural-history collections. This review is from: And So They Build (Paperback)
This is a great book. It takes 10 animals (or so) and shows the unique homes that they build. I have two little boys and also teach elementary science to K-5. I have used this book for both "jobs". It is a fun and simple way to give kids a small sampling of the great variety found in nature. My favorite is the bird which sews together leaves to make a nest. Each set of pages has a drawing of the animal and structure and the other page is a paragraph about the animal. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Glimpse into the Fascinating Homes of Animals, August 31, 2011
This review is from: And So They Build (Paperback)
Let's take a vacation and journey through the world of uniquely designed animal homes. The book, "And so They build" is a wonderful panorama of 12 fascinating animal homes. This 9 3/4" by 11" book contains descriptive text about the homes of various animals including: Satin Bower Bird, Cubiterme Termites, Harvest Mouse, Three Spined Stickleback, and Beavers just to name a few. The text describes the extraordinary world of animal behavior and how and why they build these wonderfully unusual homes. In addition to the full page descriptive text, there is a full page, full color beautiful painting of the animal architect and its architecture. These full page color plates are worthy of framing. The colored plates remind me of the beautiful colored lithographs that appeared in Victorian nature books during Victorian times. Even the cover is a beautiful full color picture of the Satin Bower Bird and its marvelous home. This cover picture, itself, would draw most children and adults to the interesting contents of this wonderful children's nature book. This book can be enjoyed by children and adults of all ages. The independent reading level of the text is probably 5th grade or above but the book could be read to any age group. This is truly a high interest beautifully illustrated nature book that should be in every elementary school library.
