This review is from: And So They Build (Paperback)
This is a great book. It takes 10 animals (or so) and shows the unique homes that they build. I have two little boys and also teach elementary science to K-5. I have used this book for both "jobs". It is a fun and simple way to give kids a small sampling of the great variety found in nature. My favorite is the bird which sews together leaves to make a nest. Each set of pages has a drawing of the animal and structure and the other page is a paragraph about the animal. I highly recommend it.

A Glimpse into the Fascinating Homes of Animals,
By White Fang (York, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: And So They Build (Paperback)
Let's take a vacation and journey through the world of uniquely designed animal homes. The book, "And so They build" is a wonderful panorama of 12 fascinating animal homes. This 9 3/4" by 11" book contains descriptive text about the homes of various animals including: Satin Bower Bird, Cubiterme Termites, Harvest Mouse, Three Spined Stickleback, and Beavers just to name a few. The text describes the extraordinary world of animal behavior and how and why they build these wonderfully unusual homes. In addition to the full page descriptive text, there is a full page, full color beautiful painting of the animal architect and its architecture. These full page color plates are worthy of framing. The colored plates remind me of the beautiful colored lithographs that appeared in Victorian nature books during Victorian times. Even the cover is a beautiful full color picture of the Satin Bower Bird and its marvelous home. This cover picture, itself, would draw most children and adults to the interesting contents of this wonderful children's nature book. This book can be enjoyed by children and adults of all ages. The independent reading level of the text is probably 5th grade or above but the book could be read to any age group. This is truly a high interest beautifully illustrated nature book that should be in every elementary school library.

Burt Kitchen is one of my favorite illustrators. In this book he is both author and illustrator and does a superb job of both. I read this book to my own children when they were younger and just now purchased another copy for our grandbaby. Mr. Kitchen describes the varied and interesting ways many different animals build their homes. Accompanying the lovely text are illustrations worthy of framing. If you are looking for a quality book to share with your children that will be educational, interesting, fun and give a heightened appreciation for quality art work, look no further, And So They Build is the book for you.

Ok I enjoyed it as well. It is simply laid out and gives good basic information on nests with wonderful pictures. I bought it for my son a couple of years ago and he still enjoys it. I have children in my home from ages 2 to 9 and they all seem to enjoy the book.
