Editorial Reviews

Review

On Recloose's debut EP, he ambitiously integrates several different styles of music into a synergy of scrambled sampled percussion, jazzy horns, and a taste for free-form structuring. Though short -- with only three extended songs and two short songs -- So This Is the Dining Room is a brave record full of ambition and grand ideas that isn't quite as effective in practice as in theory, but a noteworthy record nonetheless. As a whole, it aims to break down stylistic barriers with its heavy use of percussive samples (rather than drum machines) and its tendency to blend many different sounds into a jazz-like structure. A promising debut full of good ideas, overall. --Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars New musical territory...fluid, non-linear creativity at it's best, August 2, 2005
This review is from: So This Is the Dining Room (Audio CD)
I RARELY meet anyone who knows about Recloose, and that is truly a shame. Alternative/underground music shops in NYC will know this guy. Recloose's command of beat, rhythm, analog and electronic sound, musical composition that cross multiple genres is amazing and innovative. This music grooves, from 'mellow' to 'on the edge of your seat' and has diverse and unique moodscapes. This is sophisticated, artsy, musically saavy listening music.

4.0 out of 5 stars worth [the money], for sure, June 3, 2000
This review is from: So This Is the Dining Room (Audio CD)
Those of you that have seen Recloose live know that your stereo is not the best way to get in touch with the man, but _the Dining Room_ is a good listen, and a great buy for those of you a couple thousand miles or more from the D.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tight., March 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: So This Is the Dining Room (Audio CD)
With this debut, Recloose makes his mark as one of the most promising young electronic artists from the city where it all began (if you dont know where I'm talking about, educate yourselves).Doing an EP like this is a bit on the risky side, especially with all the stuff that comes out of here. But that's the best thing about this EP, its not like most of the stuff coming out of Detroit. Taking chances and not playing it on the safe side as just "another Detroit release"; which is the sign of a true daring artist. Sometimes he doesn't fully pull off what I think might be inteded, but he sure sounds like he has fun trying. Good stuff for those who want to catch a glimpse of the future sounds of this area.
