Editorial Reviews

Guitar legend Neal Schön has joined forces with bassist Marco Mendoza (Black Star Riders, Ted Nugent, Whitesnake, Thin Lizzy) and drummer Deen Castronovo (Journey, Ozzy Osbourne, Steve Vai, Hardline) to create a unique body of work with jazz and blues-inspired virtuosic hard rock playing, entitled SO U. The new album features Schön, Mendoza and Castronovo splitting vocal and writing duties, with many of the tracks also co-written by Night Ranger/Damn Yankee's songwriter, singer and bassist Jack Blades.

Best known as founding member and lead guitarist of Journey, Neal Schön has enjoyed a remarkable career as one of rock n' roll's top virtuosos, with a hand in creating some of the most popular songs of all time. Beginning his career more than 35 years ago in the San Francisco Bay area, the 15-year-old guitar prodigy left home to join Santana. Schön moved on in 1973 to form Journey. With Journey and other projects, he has earned 19 Top 40 singles and 25 platinum and gold albums, was awarded the prestigious 'Legend Of Live Award' at the 2011 Billboard Touring Awards, received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005 and was individually inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall Of Fame in 2013. As the only member to record on all of Journey's albums, Schön continues with the band today in its latest incarnation.

4.0 out of 5 stars I on U / So U / Listen U May 21, 2014
Format:Audio CD
While Neal just released an instrumental album in 2012 he returns with a vengeance (maybe that's because Journey doesn't appear to be too eager to go back into the studio anytime soon) with the album 'So U', a more hard rockin' blues inspired album. But, never fear, there's a couple of instrumental tracks thrown in for good luck as in 'Exotica' & the album closer, 'Big Ocean'. With Mario Mendozi of Thin Lizzy fame and Deen Castronovo (ex-Bad English among others & current drummer of Journey) Neal delivers a good hard rock album. While nothing here is anything new to this genre Neal and band mates do a fine job. Great musicianship from all three and Neal keeps you comfortable with what you would expect from him, his instrumentals. And for Journey fans, what's not to like with Deen at the helm of lead vocals for several songs giving a deja vu presence of the missing Steve Perry (Has anyone seen Steve?). Why Neal and Journey band mates just didn't have Deen fill in on vocals after Steve Augeri left, not sure, but having seen him live (singing Mother, Father, etc.) you would have thought it was Steve Perry singing on the songs he does do while on tour with Journey. Overall, a fine effort, not sure yet if it's worthy of the five star, but I think it's there between the four & five depending on the listener.

finally the album i've been waiting for him to release!! I always buy Neals solo albums hoping for greatness and they are always good solid songs but this is what i have always wanted to hear from him! vocals are excellent and obviously the guitar playing is stellar but the songwriting in this instance is what really caught me off guard. it seems recent power trio albums have revived this type of writing such as The Winery Dogs and California Breed and im hoping this is a new long-lasting trend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet another great power Trio -- SMC!! June 26, 2014
By H.G.
Format:Audio CD
Just add Schon, Mendoza, and Castronovo to the list of new power trios that include the likes of Winery Dogs and California Breed.
Quite a variety of song styles, and everyone shares in the vocal duties. And I gotta say, with Deen on vocals, the two songs "Serenity" and "Love Finds a Way" are WAY better than all of the songs on the last Journey album put together. Seriously, these guys need to just form their own group.

4.0 out of 5 stars Neal's best solo album since Late Nite July 23, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Neal Schon is at it again, this time he adds vocals to the mix bringing Marco Mendoza and Dino C from Journey. Nice to hear some vocals, especially Dean. He kinda sheds the Steve Perry from the live tracks, and sounds fantastic on 3 songs here. Marco is no stranger, and with a bit rougher vocals adds in stamp, and voice to the project. Not necessarily for Journey fans, but Neal Schon, and Marco Mendoza fans, and definitely fans of Journey Eclipse should pick this up.

5.0 out of 5 stars The shredder who keeps on shredding June 21, 2014

Best ten bucks I have spent in quite a while. I love Exotica as it reminds me of Abraxas Pool, one of my favorite albums of all time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great effort by Neal, Marco, and Dean. June 21, 2014
Format:Audio CD
I have been a Neal Schon fan for decades. Out of all of his solo work, this is one of his best. The vocals are clean and the riffs are smoking. Definitely a must.

4.0 out of 5 stars Neal Schon 2014 CD $10.00 (Not Import) June 19, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have come to really like this stereo (right/left-sub) CD of Neal's.
The music is intense and high impact. Who is driving who? Mendoza and Castronova are just driving and pounding there way through this entire CD. You start to listen to Neal but that bass and drums you cannot avoid, great job guys.
I would see them live in a heart beat.
Reason for 4 stars: Vocals, just a hair off. If this threesome had an iconic lead singer it could be runner up for rock album of year.
The three of them trade off on vocals including the addition of Jack Blades (background vocals on a couple of tunes) from Night Ranger, they also co wrote tunes on this album.
Exotica, great Santana sounding song and Love Finds A Way, Castronova vocals, Journey sounding.
Packaging is great, nice paper and plastic, great booklet with musicians and lyrics.
Stereo production is great, no complaints. Best $10.00 CD I have bought in awhile.

3.0 out of 5 stars Went back to rocking roots, Not Jazz.
Neal went back to his rocking roots with this cd. Was hoping for more of his jazz like in "Beyond the Thunder", which was a great cd.
