About the Author

Shaun C. Grenan was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1980. His interest in the Civil War began in grade school, and was furthered by all the books and frequent trips to the library that his mother provided him. In 2000, Shaun fulfilled his dream of moving to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to live and work in a historical setting. Shaun re-enacts with the 114th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Collis’ Zouaves. He also portrays Colonel Elmer Ellsworth of the 11th New York Volunteer Infantry (the 1st New York Fire Zouaves) for living history and historical presentations. He has recently organized the United States Zouave Battalion, an organization of Union Zouave re-enacting units.

Grenan’s special areas of study focus on Civil War Zouaves and Elmer Ellsworth. He hopes to tackle both subjects in future publications.

For those who have seen such movies as "Gods and Generals", "Cold Mountain", and "Gettysburg" and have always wanted to explore the idea of reenacting the American Civil War as a hobby this book is for you. It gives you all the frequently asked questions that you have when you start out in "the hobby". Mr. Grenan does a great job of introducing the new "recruits" to the various terms, equipment, and the basic military maneuvers of reenacting, he has defiantly done his research for this one. Also a great read for any current reenactors too, great as a gift from a unit to a new member!

I bought a copy of this book as a curiosity while visiting the Gettysburg National Military Park, site of the Battle of Gettysburg. I have often wondered what it might be like to reenact and while standing at the counter, this book caught my eye. It is obvious that the author knows ALOT about the Civil War and reenacting in particular!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this and will be joining a unit in my native Maryland this coming year. What a great book. This guy SEAN Grenan is a very competent author but is also very patient with his explanations, working from the expectation that his readers, like myself, will have little understanding of the terminology. Its a daunting task to try and get your arms around this entirely different world, complete with terminologies and equipment, but this book makes it a snap!

Now I need to figure out "Yankee" or "Confederate"?!

Sic Semper Tyrannis!

Grenan's book, So You Want to Be A Soldier, gives anyone interested in becoming a Civil War Re-enactor a good overview on how to begin.

Covering topics like finding events, getting equipped and basic drill tactics this book will help make sense of all involved.

While getting started in re-enacting can be confusing and intimidating to the uninitiated, this book gives the reader a good task list of what to do, and how to do it.

If you want to join the re-enacting community this book shows you what to expect and how to become a part of it.

I've read this book and it's great. I started reenacting years ago, unfortunately before this book was written. Mr. Grenan obviously knows his business, as his tips would have been very helpful for me when I started out reenacting. This is a must buy for anyone considering entering the hobby.
