5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE for Nursery start ups
Gotta say the author gives a realistic picture of starting a nursery business. By the time you finish this you will have a clear picture of the business basics. If you are looking for a book on how to grow plants look elsewhere - this is a practicle guide to starting the business. Includes the Web address for additional info.

EXACTLY the information I needed!

3.0 out of 5 stars just OK
The book is definitely not filled with technical knowledge but is useful for someone who is thinking of starting a nursery. If you are looking for reference manuals look elsewhere (I suggest The Reference Manual of Woody Plant Propagation). But if you want a book that will give you the Essentials on starting a nursery this book will give you some basic knowledge and...

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book, October 7, 2005
This review is from: So You Want to Start a Nursery (Hardcover)
As the owner of a five year old Rose Nursery I found this book to be a great combination of theory and pratical advice. I particulary like the chapters where he breaks down the numbers for what you should be charging and what your production costs should be. Anyone thinking of starting a nursery should read this book before they start.

The first chapter alone where he talks about the personalties that start nurseries is well worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'two cent opinion' - Excellent Book !!!, July 22, 2005
This review is from: So You Want to Start a Nursery (Hardcover)
As a nursery hobbist, somewhat new to the nursery industry, and as a person trying to grow my nursry hobby into a side business, I found this book to be truly wonderful. It is packed with lots of valuable information and seems to cover every aspect of the nursery business. I had initially bought the book thinking I would resell it when finished, but I liked it so much & found it to be such an excellent reference book, I have decided to keep it. I found this book to be very helpful, thorough, and delightfully written. Well, that's my 'two cent' opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars The otherside of the Nursery, May 25, 2007
This review is from: So You Want to Start a Nursery (Hardcover)
This book is not your typical "grower" book. It has little to do with actually growing, this is a business book. If provides you with details of the actual running of a nursery business that you probably have never thought of. If you are looking at starting a greenhouse/nursery/veggie stand etc this book would be a wise investment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A straight-shooting guide for nursery start-ups, December 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: So You Want to Start a Nursery (Hardcover)
Tony Avent owns Plant Delights Nursery, known for its sometimes offensive but always memorable plant catalogs, and the wild selection of unusual plants. Tony's brash, honest, and a straight shooter. If you want to be coddled and told how easy it all will be, look elsewhere as that's not Tony's style.

But I laughed out loud nearly every page from his bitingly sarcastic wit and found myself nodding my head as we walked me through the many pitfalls in operating your own nursery, and his reasoning in choosing certain ways to operate over others. The general feeling I get from reading is that if you can make it through this book with your desire to own a nursery intact, then you might just have what it takes to actually operate one.

Even if you're just curious about what it's like to own a nursery, like I was, it's an engaging read.

5.0 out of 5 stars So you want to start a nursery, November 28, 2007

This review is from: So You Want to Start a Nursery (Hardcover)
This is an excellent book on a subject that, admittedly, is not something a lot of people are involved in. It is especially nice to see a book that is readable and informative on a topic that is hard to find covered in a regular bookstore. I would highly recommend it for anyone contemplating a business involving plants.

A great book for anyone starting a nursery or even a tree farm. Lots of information about the hard work starting a nursery. Some folks after reading this book may become discouraged to start a nursery, so well this book writes about all the aspects of starting a nursery. A very good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Informative from an insiders prospective, August 15, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: So You Want to Start a Nursery (Hardcover)
Anyone who is seriously daydreaming about starting their own nursery business should read this book. Things always look so easy from the outside, but Tony Avent (I love that guy for the BEAUTIFUL gardens he creates and then shares with all of us)lets us peek behind the Wizard's curtain and see that it's a LOT of work!
Great book for those of us who see what Mr. Avent and his wife Michelle have created (Plant Delights Nursery) and FOOLISHLY think ...this doesn't seem too hard; maybe I can do this too!
