1.0 out of 5 stars So you're unoriginal. Now what?
I have learned the hard way never to trust a book just because it is written by a person with an alphabet soup after their name. The letters M and D are no exception. I have been given some of the best advice in my life by laypeople, and some of the worst by doctors. I'm sure others out there have had similar experiences.

I suppose this book would be...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, August 13, 2009
This review is from: So You're Fat. Now What? (Paperback)
This is an excellent book for people who haven't a clue as to why they are gaining weight. Straight forward answers about the basics of how your body deals with food and what to do to get on the road to weight loss. As a person who has never had to diet and has no weight problem, I found it to be very interesting and it added to my desire to eat healthy and avoid problems down the road. A must read for anyone who thinks swallowing a few pills or crash dieting is going to result in any meaningful weight loss.

5.0 out of 5 stars An extremely helpful and simple book on losing weight, August 7, 2009
This review is from: So You're Fat. Now What? (Paperback)
This book was really helpful. It didn't have gimmicks but simple, sound advice. I very much appreciated "the back of the book stuff" which really helped my daughter, who deals with weight issues, cut calories as well as encouraged her to burn more off. She already lost 5 pounds!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good read, August 7, 2009
This review is from: So You're Fat. Now What? (Paperback)
Thanks to Dr. Tirrito for writing this. It is refreshing to learn of a doctor who is interested in proactively helping patients instead of treating them after they have health issues. We need more doctors who are willing to do that.

This book is informative and a good tool for those of us out there who like to really know the how's and why's of losing weight. I have no doubt that it will be referred to time and again in our house.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read, August 5, 2009
This review is from: So You're Fat. Now What? (Paperback)
Hard to believe a doctor wrote this. Yes it is full of good clinical information, but it is also a great read. Easy to understand and grasp the concepts without feeling like you are reading a text book or a medical journal... I'm glad I found it... makes perfect sense now. Bravo to the author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now What? Read This Book and Take Action!, January 24, 2012
This review is from: So You're Fat. Now What? (Paperback)
Add this book to your library: So You're Fat, Now What? by Salvatore Tirrito, M.D. (2009) Dr. Tirrito hails from the metro New York area and is a practicing cardiologist in Tucson, AZ. He is trained in exercise physiology and is an accomplished endurance athlete. Although the title may take some people aback, it is straightforward, and so is his fine paperback book of about 100 pages. It is chock full of easy to follow guidelines and charts for healthy eating and exercise. Dr. Tirrito writes the way he talks, and he walks the talk!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Secret, February 12, 2010
This review is from: So You're Fat. Now What? (Paperback)
In 2008, $40 billion was spent on the diet industry. Yes, that's billion with a B. It's not surprising, when you figure that in the US alone there are 97 million fat adults (no, we're not even counting children). So you can understand how I was quite disarmed when I read on the back cover of this book, "I will tell you right here and now why this book will work for you. The truth is simple. The secret to dieting success is this: there is no secret." What?? He's joking right?

Honestly, no. He's not joking. When we take a real moment to stop kidding ourselves, we know it's true. Nothing on Earth can make that cabbage soup diet work for long. All of the shakes, books, and weird equipment we've tried haven't amounted to much more than a hole in our pockets, yet we're still looking for that miracle answer. However, we know, deep down, that there isn't any real secret to losing weight; we just don't want to acknowledge it.
Dr. Tirrito tells us that many diets work, in the short term, because they tell us how much to eat, and keep us aware of what we are putting in our mouth. However, the diets fail because they do not teach us how to determine the amount to eat, or what we should be eating. Basically it comes down to the law of "calorie in, calorie out".

Out of all of the diet books I've read, I've never gotten answers about the nuances of nutrition the way I do here. He does a great job of explaining in more detail just what fat, carbs, and proteins do in our body and why we need them - something many diet books fail to do. He also explained about the purpose of insulin, and why we're still hungry after eating a full dinner, drinking a case of soda, and following it up with a gallon of ice cream.
In addition, Dr. Tirrito stresses the importance of physical activity. He states that frequency and duration is the key to maximum weight loss.
Also of importance is his explanation of plateaus. That it isn't our body's way of telling us this is the weigh to be at , but our body's way of saying that it's caught up to the changes we've made - now work harder.

The book closes with this thought. "By following the few simple steps that I have outlined in this book, you have the ability to change and find that skinny person that has been hiding inside you all these years." I think he may be on to something.

5.0 out of 5 stars Straight talk, tremendous tools and plan, November 23, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: So You're Fat. Now What? (Paperback)
The book is exceptionally well written. It is straight forward and gives the reader the tools to be successful. Weight loss is hard and this doctor presents an excellent plan to make the dieter clearly understand what they have to do in terms of food vs exercise to lose weight. In the plan, the patient learns how to calculate how many calories a day they can take in without gaining weight and how to calculate the caloric content of what they are eating. It takes the mystery out of the process. I highly recommend this book as a superior tool to utilize and plan how to lose weight.
