4.0 out of 5 stars The best I've found so far., January 28, 2001
By
There is not a lot of good information out there regarding the correct way to wear Scottish National Dress; Thompson's book almost wins by default, despite being a good reference on the subject. The strength of the book is his clear explanation of the standards of wear expected in Scotland and as such is invaluable to anyone intending to wear National Dress in that country and not offend. However discussion on individual standards developing in the former 'colonies' is light and the wearing of trews as legitimate National Dress by Border Scots and overseas clansmen is almost completely lacking. But then this is a book on wearing the kilt, is it not! For the first time wearer, one can agonise over details that seasoned wearers take for granted: should the kilt be worn under the ribs or slung on the hips; at what height should ghillie brogue laces be tied; most of these points are covered with clear explanations. In summary, a great reference book but perhaps in need of an update with regards the evolution of fashions since the last edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars As title hints, if you'll be wearing a kilt, you NEED this, August 2, 2003
This review is from: So You're Going to Wear the Kilt! (Paperback)
This is the only guide book I know of (and believe me, I've looked) that goes into every facet of the correct way to wear a kilt (and what to wear with it, for what occasion, and how). EVERYTHING is covered, from length of the kilt, to black- and white-tie affairs, which kilt jackets go with a bow tie and which with an ascot, what sort of footwear to have, and much else. Get this, no matter what it takes, or you will probably look like a complete dork to any real Scotsman.
(And yes, the author is VERY "proper" and a stickler for tradition. Even if you're a punkrocker with a UtiliKilt(TM) you should still get this - learn the rules before you break them, so you can break them with style.

4.0 out of 5 stars So you're going to wear the kilt, January 11, 2000
I found this book to be very informative and particularly demystifying. Above all the late Scotty Thompson is an advocate of wearing the kilt early and often. He gives both the purist and the simpler view of what is proper and labels the views clearly. He wants people to wear the kilt proudly, and tells them how to avoid the gaffes that either offend or look ludicrous. After reading this book you can feel confident that you are correct in your highland attire. If there is any shortcoming it may be in his descriptions of the construction of various accessories. His instructions for making things like cockades and toories for bonnets are a bit difficult to follow. All in all though, it is excellent

5.0 out of 5 stars Very thorough and helpful..., December 28, 1999

I originally purchased "So You're Going To Wear The Kilt" in 1993 to prepare for my wedding. I found that not only is it full of tips on how to properly wear the kilt and accessories and what is considered incorrect (or disrespectful) but the book also had many tips on assembling a Scottish wardrobe on a budget. I find that I have repeatedly referred back to the book and have found useful information each time. Scotty Thompson also covers both the accepted vs. the purist view of Scottish attire. I highly recommend this book if you plan on wearing the kilt.

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive guide to wearing the kilt., October 12, 1998

I first got a copy of this book when I knew nothing about wearing the kilt, and I found it to be both extremely helpful and quite interesting. Later, in my travels through Scotland, I found that this book (by an American) is acknowledged to be the definitive sourcebook on the subject, even in Scotland.

4.0 out of 5 stars Get the facts and be able to laugh at those that don't, September 23, 2002

For many the wearing of the kilt is full of surprises and confusing issues. This book plainly gives insight as to the appropriate use of the kilt. There is also information on accessories that one may or may not decide to use.

Things you may find in this book include.
The difference between a lady's and a man's kilt (Very important).
Why weapons and finery may not be appropriate.
Alternative ways to keep from buying expensive accessories (Some make your own diagrams).
And great insight as to the differing opinion of the purists
and the more commonly acceptable way to do things.

Whether a long time wearer or a newbie. A must read to
keep from being embarrassed.

For all those also that really want to know "What does a Scotsman wear under there?" The author has given some very appropriate ways to respond if you are so asked.

4.0 out of 5 stars A quirky book from a quirky guy (who knows his stuff), May 20, 2003

This review is from: So You're Going to Wear the Kilt! (Paperback)
Without going into much depth, this tiny book covers pretty much everything about the modern wearing of kilts. It's a very practical book, targeted at those who wear or want to wear the national dress of Scotland (and parts of Ireland). Thompson is an old-world purist, prickly and correct but without the mean, cutting manner often (properly) associated with folks in the historical recreational realm.

Speaking in a first-person tone, relating his experiences growing up in kilture, Thompson freely dispenses advice and how-to notes with humor. If you're going to wear the kilt, or you want to learn how, this is probably the first book you ought to read.

Having said that, let's mention the books shortcomings: the writing and editing give the book a dated, tinny tone. The illustrations are minimal, and what is there is pretty poorly done. There's little context to flesh out an interesting topic.

But it's still the book you ought to read first. Unless I write a better one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource for anyone who dons the kilt., September 13, 1998
By A Customer
This book is a wonderful & humerous resource. I generally suggest it for the first-time kilt wearer, but it may also be read with pleasure by the person who has worn the kilt for many years. You'll enjoy reading it, and will learn from it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Bold Fashion Statement, February 25, 2006
This review is from: So You're Going to Wear the Kilt! (Paperback)
I'm the last guy I ever expected to buy, read or review anything having to do with clothes or fashion but here I am doing it. I'm getting married in a few months and I can't remember everything Grandpa said about the proper wearing of a kilt. It's too late to ask him so I turned to the book. It was a good choice.

I suspect that this will appeal to a rather limited market, namely those people who are interested in the "proper" way to wear highland dress. It gives short and well explained chapters on just about every aspect of traditional dress and has a little more besides. The author is straightforward in describing things and does so in a matter that is quite enjoyable. He is careful to distinguish between his personal preferences and those of "purists". Illustrations help to explain nuances and differences and also help to explain more difficult things like tying certain knows and making some accoutraments. Some of them could stand be be a little larger but they get the job done.

It serves its purpose and does so well and with a bit of humor.
