So what's with all the blood?

Everytime you have fought someone and then go to talk to someone or enter a cutscene you and your party are covered in splattered blood...

Your character is engaged in conversation with a thoughtful look on his face, meanwhile he's covered head to toe in blood...

I realize that's what would happen if you were really slaying people, but it just seemed like an odd choice to keep it realistic....or is it just me?
