This book provides a good basis for understanding the foster care system, and what can go wrong in it. Too often foster parents are treated as simple caretakers or custodians. In reality, they should be regarded as the child(ren)'s parent. Hopefully you won't run into problems with social services, birth parents, the court, or anything. But if you do, this book can help give you some advice that covers lots of areas, from the day the child is brought to your door with just the clothes on their back (make sure you get a boarding agreement from Social Services before their representive leaves your home) to the day the child leaves your home (you can push for a smooth transistion so the child doesn't get further damaged by suddenly losing yet another a parent).Being a foster parent isn't always roses and butterflies. But foster parents are needed. With this book, you may find that any issues that come up that you weren't expecting, have happened already to others before you, and their advice may be of help. Best of luck to you and to the children you take under your roof!

Such a disappointment,
This review is from: So you want to be a foster parent - what do you want to do that for? (Paperback)
When I read reviews for this book and the "look inside" I thought that this would be a very comprehencieve book with great detail as to the emmotional aspects of foster care for both foster parents and the children involved. Wrong. The best part of the book was the same stuff I read here online. The rest of the book drags on in an unorganzied rough outline that makes the foster care process seem even more confussing then it already/actually is. It was a total waste of money and an even bigger waste of my time. If I had it to do all over again I would never have bought it.
