About the Author

Karyn Calabrese is a highly sought after holistic health expert and successful entrepreneur who runs a thriving vegan wellness company in Chicago. At 64 years old, Karyn looks nearly a generation younger without the help of surgery or botox and enjoys boundless energy and enthusiasm. She has been a fixture in local and national media including two appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show that focused on aging well. In 1995, Karyn opened Karyn's Fresh Corner, only the second raw foods restaurant in the country where she taught classes and saw clients. She also opened a nearby holistic spa, Karyn s Inner Beauty Center, because she believes eating healthy foods is just as important as cleansing the body of toxicity from negative foods, environmental and chemical pollution. The Center is a healing day spa with 12 unique holistic therapies designed to address all aspects of well-being, focusing on maintaining health while encouraging disease prevention. In October of 2002, Karyn merged both locations into one 7,500 square foot destination. Karyn developed a line of high quality food, products, supplements and a skincare/makeup line that is available in the store and for shipping around the world. In 2005, Karyn opened a new restaurant, Karyn's Cooked, for people looking for a bridge from a standard American diet to the more hard-core approach of raw foods. Due to the popularity of Karyn's Cooked, Karyn opened her newest restaurant, Karyn's on Green in January of 2010. Karyn's on Green is a more upscale approach to vegan dining with reinterpreted versions of classic American cuisine and cocktails. Karyn has created a thriving business out of teaching people to take care of their bodies using natural foods and detoxification. Karyn was awarded the First Annual Raw and Living Foods Golden Branch Award in 2002 for introducing the idea of raw and living foods to the greatest number of people in the mainstream public. The Karyn's brand including her restaurants, Inner Beauty Center, supplements and skincare/makeup line has endured major success and continues to thrive. As big as her business has grown, Karyn still finds the most fulfillment in teaching her monthly free information sessions and bi-monthly detox programs that expose hundreds of new people to the food and practices that have given her so much health and happiness.

Ok, call me square, but I'm never going to be into a book that calls for me to give myself home enemas.

I purchased this book because I thought it would have recipes for detoxification and juicing. While it does have this, a majority of the recipes promote her product line with no substitutions offered or alternative products. Althought I skimmed the book, I did not see any standardized dosing for the herbs other than the amount of capsules to take and not a mg measurement. I think the information is great and I believe the detox program seems very good but I would be stuck buying her product line in order to do this.

Karyn's program is literally life-changing. Having been through her detox program, I can attest that you will feel better than you ever have in your entire life. Even if you don't have prominent aches, pains and health issues, this program will make you realize how healthy you can be. An abundant source of energy, weight loss, stronger hair and nails, and clearer skin are just a few of the benefits to her de-tox. And if you DO suffer from chronic ailments, no doubt your discomfort will be diminished. This book spells it all out for you in a clear, clever and conversational style that makes it a quick-read. BUY IT!!

I appreciate Karyn's sharing the catalyst to her choice in becoming a Raw vegan which she related happened after witnessing her mother's quality of life and health fading from toxic acute medical care treatment. Her contention that your health will not change without a radical change in not only a diet but, thinking as you must view health as a process including spiritual, dietary, exercise, and rational choices that make up a whole person. The author also included an action plan to maintain optimal health after you've decided to cleanse your body in steps she suggests. Karyn also gives insight into her choice of the book's title which is that the nuts should be soaked to allow nutrients to be better absorbed though soaking to disable an enzyme inhibitor. Likewise, almost metaphorically, the colon needs to be cleared to allow better absorption of nutrients into the bloodstream. The author believes in cleansing still after her very stringent Raw Vegan diet and exercise regimen to stave off impurities from environmental impact, then everyone should at least look into do so. It should be noted however, that on page 111 the author has a recipe for "Raw Oatmeal", which requires oat groats that she says to soak in organic apple juice for 3 hours or until liquid is absorbed. Oat groats must soak overnight, especially when eaten raw. It was not noted in this book for actual soaking time. Once soaked for at least 24 hours, one can proceed with her recipe.

I debated about getting this book for awhile since the title is so bizarre. I got it since I read that she had studied Ann Wigmore and Viktoras Kulvinskas. So far, it's been incredibly bad and the recipes are terrible also. She uses lecithin in the smoothie. Yes, I'm sure one would start "craving" rejuvelac. Lots of psyllium and clay. Really?? Better books on detoxing and healthy lifestyle are the "Beauty Detox Solution" by Kimberly Snyder and Crazy Sexy Diet by Kris Carr and Survival in the Twenty First Century by Viktoras Kulvinskas. Not alot of joy going on in this book either. I'm all for colonics, enemas, etc., that is not the issue. There are way better books on health, I just gave you three.

This is a nice book if you are into fasting and detoxing and you want an alternative plan. I didn't follow everything she suggests (nor does she expect you to) but I enjoyed trying out her obtions for detoxing like enzyme pills, flax oil and I actually made rejuvelac! It's a nice resource to have in your detox library. Take what works for you and what you can afford because no matter what, you will see results. Also, watch her videos on You Tube to give you additional inspiration. And if you have a chance when you are in Chicago visit one of her raw or cooked restaurants. Karen's Cooked is always on my to do list when I'm in the Windy City.

excellent information... you have to be dedicated though, lots of supplements to buy.. and a big commitment... but, all information agrees with so many other books, I've read. I want to do this exactly, but, it certainly includes alot of different supplements. I only did it for a week... but am going to get back to it for a good cleanse.

Ok, call me square, but I'm never going to be into a book that calls for me to give myself home enemas. Additionally, the recipes in here are very involved. I believe in all of her philosophies and clearly they work, because if you've seen Karyn's youtube videos, then you know that she looks 20 years younger than she actually is. My advice would be to check this one out of the library first.

Karyn has been doing this a very long time. She also walks her talk. In her book, she demystifies detoxification and brings it down to a level that anyone can understand. Even if you are not raw, you can incorporate some of the raw foods and also the juicing and smoothies into creating a healthy lifestyle. She is amazing and so is this book.
