Book Description

1594148759 978-1594148750 May 7, 2010
SOAP BUBBLES cannot be pigeon-holed into one genre, nor should it be. It’s an array of mystery, romance, and legal drama. Often funny, sometimes shocking, Soap Bubbles depicts the glitzy microcosm of TV’s daytime drama, where rampant sexuality vies with an almost obscene lust for influence and power. Set during the 60s, 70s and 80s, a whole generation springs to life in this brash, voguish classic by the author of Fifty Cents For Your Soul.

In the tradition of Judith Krantz and Jacqueline Susann, Denise Dietz recounts the tempestuous lives and careers of three ugly ducklings—Delly Diamond, Anissa Cartier and Maryl Bradley. Concealing childhood scars, each duckling-turned-swan learns how to make love, make money, and make believe. Each hopes that the soap opera, Morning Star, will afford an opportunity for the future. Instead, a studio fire and the resultant death of the soap’s reviled producer leads to a shattering confrontation with the past, as the book races toward a compelling and totally unexpected climax.

PRAISE FOR SOAP BUBBLES:

A fictional soap opera brings three friends joy and headaches in a nostalgic...glitzy...thriller..."
... Publishers Weekly

Dietz's depiction of television provides lots of cutting, witty dialogue.
... Gumshoe Review

Soap Bubbles draws the reader in from the first page as the journey through the lives of three complex women begins. Delly, Anissa and Maryl each have a childhood that contains events that will shape their self concept, scar their hearts, and lead them to each other in the land of Hollywood years into the future.

Eventually their careers collide. Then, Anissa and Maryl must work together to find the person who started a fire, for which Delly is being accused, in the television studio. In this case, the character's real lives are more exciting than the soap opera in which Anissa and Delly star.

Denise Dietz does a wonderful job of telling each woman's story and then bringing the ladies together in a plausible way for the second half of the book. You will find yourself crying, cheering and laughing as these smart characters search for happiness in a city where everyone wants something from them. There are many twists and surprises that make it a book hard to set aside.
... Affaire de Coeur

“Vivid characters carry a star-dusted mystery thriller along at a breathless pace.”
... Lillian Stewart Carl

“In Dietz’s Soap Bubbles, Valley Of The Dolls meets General Hospital meets a glitzy, very pregnant pair of Cagney and Laceys in a bang up, sexy, entertaining read full of characters who don’t let go when you close the book.”
... Bestselling author Terese Ramin

“Denise Dietz once again proves herself the diva of witty dialogue and whiplash plot twists in this fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the soap operas we all love. Soap Bubbles is a richly detailed story with believable characters and a story line full of surprises.”
... Bestselling author Fran Baker

“What’s a nice guy like me doing, reading a novel full of kaleidoscopic sins, behind-the-scenes show biz turned inside out, and story twists and surprises piled one on top of the next? Having a glorious time, that’s what. Thank you, Ms. Dietz.”
... Bestselling author Robert S. Levinson

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A fictional soap opera brings three friends joy and headaches in a nostalgic and convoluted melodrama that can't decide if it wants to be a glitzy trash-a-thon, a thriller, or a heartstring-tugger. Aspiring actresses Delly Diamond, Anissa Cartier, and Maryl Bradley must break free from childhood ghosts and confront adult challenges on the set of Morning Star, a Guiding Light-esque soap, but their friendship and livelihoods are tested after a suspicious and deadly studio fire shuts down production and a recently fired Delly emerges as the prime suspect. Dietz (Fifty Cents for Your Soul) has trouble keeping the busy plot on track, while clumsy mood shifts and a too-heavy reliance on the friends' requisite backstories of childhood trauma distract from what's good about the book—namely, the period details and occasional soap opera histrionics. More About the Author

When Denise [Deni] Dietz was in the third grade, she wrote her first story, THE PENCIL WHO GREW UP TO BE A STUB. Although the assignment was to write a one-page story, using an ink pen, Deni wrote a five-page story, first-person...and she used a pencil (the narrator of her story). Whereupon, she received a failing grade for not following orders. Just like her series heroine, diet guru Ellie Bernstein, Deni doesn't follow orders unless they make sense.

Years later, after Deni had enjoyed a short-lived singing career and acting career, she sat at her typewriter, flexed her fingers, and pounded out her first culinary mystery: THROW DARTS AT A CHEESECAKE, inspired by her part-time job as a Weight Watchers lecturer. In "Cheesecake," diet club members are getting killed off at goal weight and eating as if their very lives depended on it. The second book in the series, BEAT UP A COOKIE, revolves around a group of M*A*S*H* addicts and is dedicated to Alan Alda.

Switching to a computer, Deni hit the bestseller list with FOOTPRINTS IN THE BUTTER - an Ingrid Beaumont Mystery co-starring Hitchcock the Dog. She followed that success with her stand-alone, FIFTY CENTS FOR YOUR SOUL, her "reluctant witch mystery," EYE OF NEWT, and the 3rd and 4th books in her diet club mystery series, CHAIN A LAMB CHOP TO THE BED and STRANGLE A LOAF OF ITALIAN BREAD. "Strangle" was nominated for a Left Coast Crime "Lefty" Award as the most humorous mystery of 2009.

Cloning herself into historical romance author Mary Ellen Dennis, Deni wrote THE LANDLORD'S BLACK EYED DAUGHTER. Mary Ellen's STARS OF FIRE will be out December, 2010.

Married to Aussie/Canadian author, Gordon Aalborg (AKA Victoria Gordon), whom she met on-line through a writers loop, Deni, with Gordon, collaborated on a romantic suspense, FINDING BESS, and moved to Vancouver Island, where they are owned by a chocolate Lab named Magic.

4.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable tale, May 8, 2010
This review is from: Soap Bubbles (Five Star Expressions) (Hardcover)
In their early thirties, wannabe actresses and BFFs Delly Diamond, Anissa Cartier, and Maryl Bradley have roles on the Morning Star soap opera. However, even though they have come a long way from Blood, Sweat and Tears of the 1960s and 1970s, each knows they have a long way to go if they are to make it and if their respective traumatic childhoods in Queens don't hold them back.

Things turn ugly between the friends when Delly is fired. Soon after being canned, a fire causes production of the soap to shut down. The police suspect Delly as the arsonist as she had the motive and opportunity. She and her two buddies investigate hoping to prove otherwise.

This is an enjoyable tale that brings to life three decades, but the book never decides whether it is an amateur sleuth or a character study. When the subplot focuses on the mid 1980s, the three BFFs try to prove Delly is innocent in an entertaining investigation; when the subplot goes back to their childhood, the tale spins into a character study as each struggle with a nasty situation. Still the child is the adult and as such fans will enjoy Soap Bubbles, a homage to when the soaps were kings of daytime TV.
