How do you say Zen³? Well we say Zen Cubed in the office but you can also say Zen 3 (three) or "That 3D cube puzzle game" whatever is easier for you. But Zen3 or Zen 3 is going to be easier to type because that little 3 ³ is tough to type.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too Many Bugs To Enjoy Fully July 3, 2013
Verified Purchase
While the game itself has a very good premise there are many bugs that need issuing.

First, the controls are very buggy. Like another reviewer said they fight for control causing a lot of frustation. To get it to rotate at an angle vs just left/right or up/down is the real issue with controls in my experience.

Second, there are too many tutorials in the beginning. One or two would suffice but there seems to be for the first half or so of the beginning levels with them.

Third, I complete the spring levels and unlock summer. I exited the game and returned to find summer locked and saying I need to complete spring first. I redid the levels unlocking summer once again and completed the first level to see if it registers this time. I exited the game and returned and again summer was locked. It is absurd to force someone to complete everything in one sitting without exiting the game.

Fourth, the settings is pretty much non-existent. The least thay can do is add sensitivity bars to help us better control the way we control things. Settings is only to turn off sound, like on facebook and see their other games. What kind of settings are those?

Fifth, taking the issues aside more level are needed. Even if it had none of the issues stated above, the price is not worth the very few levels it actually contains.

On the plus side, the music is nice and graphics are okay as well. Had it more levels and way less bugs this will be a great game to sit back and relax with. As it is, it is more frustrating than enjoyable.

I really wanted to give this app 4 stars, but between the controls and the bugs, I simply can't.

I've been playing with Rubik's Cube since it was introduced, so flipping a cube around to get the face where I want it is, pardon the phrase, "child's play" to me. And generally, flipping the cube around on a 10" tablet is similarly easy, as long as it is in 90° increments.

The problem with Zen (cubed) is that three controls all fight for attention, which ultimately leads to frustration, and even the occasional crash. A swipe flips the cube, a 'touch and drag' places pieces on the cube, a long press removes the piece under your finger, and a two-finger rotation rotates the cube in place. That would be fine, but there are major problems with the implementation. Most notably, there is no code to distinguish a swipe from a second finger being placed on the screen. Invariably, this leads to the cube flipping in the direction of the second finger placement rather than realizing you placed a second finger to rotate the cube in place. To compound the problem, while you are attempting (often in vain) to rotate the cube, you leave one finger on a piece on the cube too long and the piece detaches. Now you must send the piece back to the tray so you can reapply it.

By the way, more than once has a piece come off and get 'stuck'. My only solution at that point was to press 'HOME' and reenter the app.

The network permission, while I don't like it, appears to be there for the self-promo in the Settings page (for turning the sound off or on) and for the link to their Facebook page. No other reason seems to exist, and, thankfully, no ads or anything appeared in the game.

Regarding the tutorials.

4.0 out of 5 stars not quite five stars July 3, 2013

I really enjoy playing this game. It's pretty much: Rotate cube and "wrap" it with colored paper. The goal is to wrap the entire cube with paper and not to have any pieces left over. There is a small cube on the top to guide you on where the colors need to be placed. Some levels require some logic to figure out how to cover the cube and others are pretty simple. There are also some basic instructions as you play and new ways to fill up the cube pop up. There are four seasons with 12 levels in each.

Now, I think there's a reason this game is called "Zen" and why the sounds (though nice) aren't very annoying. You'll need patience and a bit of calm to do this game. And not because of the thinking. The controls are the main reason I couldn't give this game five stars, though I thoroughly enjoyed it. You use your finger to Swipe (up/down and left/right) to switch the cube side. You also use two fingers to press and swipe (the right one goes up and the left goes down in an curve--or vice versa, depending on what direction you want it to go). Now, on my kindle fire, the controls were a bit difficult to use, as the cube wouldn't always respond correctly and it would do something different (like instead of flipping the cube, it would just move the cube like I had swiped it). I think adding buttons for flip/rotate would make the game a lot more "calming".

Overall, though I enjoyed the game, I did think this game was overly too easy--just finished spring and summer in probably almost 30 minutes total. I still have to do fall and winter (as each season unlocks as soon as you complete the previous season), so I'll update this if they are harder for me. So far, though, I'm not too challenged. The price of $1 is very good for this game. I would recommend this game to anyone who likes logic puzzles.

Puzzles are mostly easy, a couple are a challenge mainly due to the horrible interface. Same as everyone else said, fix the controls and add levels. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Zen not
I did not find this Zen at all, lol. I mean, it's a good thinking and maneuvering puzzle game, but I would not qualify it as particularly relaxing.
