The Jazz Club series is an attractive addition to the Verve catalogue. With its modern design and popular choice of repertoire, the Jazz Club is not only opened for Jazz fans, but for everyone that loves good music. This collection by the wonderfully gifted trumpeter features eight tracks including 'Whiplash', 'Go Back Home' and more. Universal. 2008.

5.0 out of 5 stars At long last! November 14, 2008
Format:Audio CD
I wrote the liner notes for this European release. I apologize for the upcoming sales plug here, but...

I have pushed for this release with various other labels for many years. For awhile it looked like it would never see a re-release due to (frankly, unrealistic) upfront sales guarantee stipulations from Universal, which owns the rights. Due to the perseverance of a few individuals, an agreement was reached that allowed the licensing of this title with a limited European distribution deal.

Just in case you are wondering, I do not make a nickel off any sales of this. My intentions with getting Don's music back into the public consciousness and marketplace have always been philanthropic. And now for the plug.

The last album of Don's not yet released on CD is Haiku. That title is also owned by Universal. It has been conveyed to me by the person primarily responsible for the release of Soaring that the likelihood for Haiku to be released will be totally dependent upon how well Soaring sells. So if you want to see Haiku released, please purchase Soaring. Spread the word. Tell others to purchase it or make gifts of it.

One upside of this is that you will be getting a good album. It is one of my favorite albums of Don's. I'm not asking for you to waste your money. This is not one of Don's mixed results commercial efforts. Even though it is a studio album there are many aspects about the performances that give off a "live" vibe, and anyone who knows of this band will tell you it was always a memorable experience attending a Don Ellis concert.

Please buy, then enjoy. Thanks.

UPDATED 9/14/10: I should have provided this long ago but...blah, blah, blah.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it. Buy it now.... November 15, 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have waited and waited for this CD to come out. "Soaring" is one of my favorite Ellis albums competing with "Tears of Joy" as perhaps the best. I can only say that once I received this CD, I immediately listened to it three times in a row. I would have gone for a fourth time, but it was getting late.

To me "Soaring" is the studio-recorded book-end to the "Tears of Joy" live album. It mostly has the same personnel, same type of compositions, same excellent musicianship. This album holds, I think, some of the best writing of all the Ellis discography. Not to judge a book by its cover, but the simple, elegant rendering of a seagull image in white, black and blue perfectly compliments the "Tears of Joy" cover. From the liner notes I learned that Maria Eckstein provided the graphic artwork for "Soaring" and, given the similarity in composition, I would think perhaps "Tears of Joy" as well.

"Soaring" opens with "Whiplash", a Hank Levy piece, a bracing opener that quickly finds its groove in the fashion that exhibits Hank Levy to be a master of composition in odd-metered tempos.

"Sladka Pitka" is a contribution from keyboardist Milcho Leviev of "Bulgarian Bulge" fame who again mines Hungarian folk music as an inspiration for a multi-faceted big band. This track, however, is a more straight ahead piece that builds to a stunning climax (think: good ending for a DCI show)

"The Devil Made Me Write This Piece" features Don on drums in (I learned from the liner notes) his last recording as a drummer. You can guess the meter, or read the liner notes and learn what was really going on.

"Go Back Home" is all Sam Falzone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Soaring by Don Ellis Copright 1973 May 24, 2009
Format:Audio CD
The release of SOARING from 1973 by Don Ellis - the original 1/4 tone trumpet player, composer of film music and SOARING big band music - made this album to get out of a comtract. It turned out to be one of the best he made. The opening track by Hank Levy "Whiplash" is so much fun - to list and play - that you may not get to the rest of the pieces for several playings. The use of 7/4 time and the breaks in 14/8 are so much fun! The piano great MILCHO LEVIEV piece is interesting. The next two pieces - by ELLIS AND FALSONE - are interesting because Ellis is featured on drums on THE DEVIL MADE ME WRITE THIS PIECE and GO BACK HOME became one of the most requested encore numbers from road trips. INVINCIBLE features a very young VINCE DENHAM that made other Sax holders wonder why they thought they could play in an Ellis band. Ellis had to answer this piece with SIDONIE just to show who was Boss!!! The other two compositions are really nice Spring afternoon driving ballads.
This is a very enjoyable CD, so if you can get a copy within 6 months.....DO SO!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting music from Don Ellis - as always February 15, 2009
Format:Audio CD
Hank Levy's "Whiplash" and Ellis' "Invincible" really stand out in this album. Especially Vince Denham's screaming alto on "Invincible" (listen to him also on George Muribus "Brazilian Tapestry"). You just can't go wrong with Don Ellis. Especially when he utilized a small string section in his orchestra that added warmth, depth, and just plain excitement to the music. 'Nuff said.

Personnel:
Don Ellis - trumpet, drums, flugelhorn
Woodwinds - Fred Selden, Vince Denham, Sam Falzone, Gary Herbig
Trumpets - Bruce MacKay, Jack Caudill, Gil Rathel
Trombones - Mike Jamieson, Kenny Sawhill
Tuba - Doug Bixby
French Horn - Sidney Muldrow
Guitar - Jay Graydon
Piano - Milcho Leviev
Bass - Dave McDaniel
Drums - Ralph Humphrey, Ron Dunn
Congas - Lee Pastora
Electric Violin - Earl Correy, Joel Quivey, Renita Koven
Electric Cello - Pat Kudzia
