Book Description

5 and upK and up

A majestic bird swoops down, snatches its prey, then soars into the clouds. It is a bald eagle, one of North America's largest hunting birds.

For centuries the bald eagle has been a symbol of majesty, strength, and freedom. In 1782 it became the official emblem of the United States. Yet now this fierce hunter is in danger of extinction.

Gail Gibbons's thoroughly researched text and dramatic illustrations present the bald eagle in all its grandeur -- hunting, courting, nesting, and hatching -- with fascinating facts and statistics about this remarkable winged predator and the efforts to save it.

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3?This fact-filled offering takes readers through the life cycle of the bald eagle, introduces the majestic bird's history as a symbol of strength and beauty in North America, and describes successful efforts to increase its once-diminishing numbers. Appealing watercolor illustrations, labeled diagrams, definitions, and well-researched facts come together to form a perfect connection for teachers seeking to expand science units. It provides a blueprint for class projects, not only on bald eagles, but on other birds and animals as well. 5.0 out of 5 stars Great Teaching Tool with Gorgeous Illustations, July 30, 1999

This review is from: Soaring with the Wind: The Bald Eagle (Hardcover)
I used this book as the basis for a program on eagles prepared for children ages 5-9. The book provides lots of accurate facts about the eagle, its habitat requirements and how we can insure its viability. The illustrations are wonderful and enhance the technical story of the eagle being told by Gail Gibbons. I will use this book again for my own children and for programs focusing on eagles for the early elementary school age kids to learn about our eagle population on the James River.

5.0 out of 5 stars On Eagle's Wings, January 19, 2009

This review is from: Soaring with the Wind: The Bald Eagle (Hardcover)
The hymn, "I Will Lift You Up on Eagle's Wings" could be the soundtrack of this book.

There are fewer things more beautiful to behold than the sight of a noble, graceful raptor. This is an excellent teaching tool about eagles for young children from preschool to the early grades. Readers will be delighted at the facts about the raptors, e.g. their habitats and behaviors and ways we as people can protect these noble birds.

The illustrations are masterpieces and readers of all ages will be captivated by the eagle and the natural rhythm of the story. People treated to this wonderful book will no doubt feel as if they are being borne on eagle's wings.

Wow. This book was way more than we expected it to be. One son looked through this almost non-stop for weeks. It was packed with interesting information and had great illustrations.

A really fabulous look at Bald Eagles. We found some video clips online and that really helped bring what we'd read about alive. A must for any study of eagles.
