5.0 out of 5 stars School is in session and Soca 101 gets an A+ !!!
This is an excellent record for neophytes to soca and calypso and those of us who grew up with it. This is an excellent record for neophytes to soca and calypso and those of us who grew up with it. For the inexperienced, originally, calypso was considered to be the more socially concious form of the music with stinging social commentary with soca being classified as more of party and 'wuk up' music. As time has progressed and the purists are no longer in dominance the distinction has blurred and the words are used interchangeably. That said, this album is excellent with hits that predate the Soca Gold Series which started in the the late 90's. This album includes out and out party hits from the classic Longtime to Balance Batty even the seminal hit Hold Ya Bam Bam by the Bajan Speedy which heralded in extremely short simple verses with a driving americanised (almost hip hop) base and even a 'true calypso' by the Mighty Sparrow . This is a terrific album and takes you back to the early to mid 90's when calypso was now gaining international exposure outside of those who had emigrated from the Caribbean. It is perhaps fitting that this album finishes with Time to Wine by Iwer a true soca song which is all about 'wining up and wukking up'. You can't go wrong with this album the songs are fantastic!
