10 and up5 and up
Tess’s love in life is soccer. When she finds out that all sports at her school will be cut unless the community votes for a tax levy, Tess will do anything to rally votes. She’s even joining forces with a cheerleader to help spread the word and raise funds. Throughout the campaign to save soccer, Tess is playing her heart out on the soccer field and struggling to make passing grades in her classes. Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8–Tess Munro, 13, loves soccer. When school sports funding hinges on getting a tax levy voted in, she works hard to make it happen, but her fundraising activities go awry, and she makes an enemy of an imperious classmate. Jillian hates her after her soccer ball hits Bo, on whom Jillian has a crush. When Tess's team suffers its only loss of the season, she vows to win her last home game, which is on the same day as the election. Her team wins the game, but the levy is voted down. In an abrupt but satisfying ending, Tess raises funds for a pay-for-play team and earns Jillian's friendship. Seven soccer chick rules are dispensed throughout the novel. Although they work well to highlight Tess's motivation, they would be more effective at the beginning or end of chapters. Girl jocks are the natural audience for Soccer Chick Rules, but it will also appeal to a wider readership. Its hopeful but realistic ending sends an important message to any girl with a passion or a cause.–Tina Zubak, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, PA

From Booklist

Tess Munro is the soccer chick in question, a hard-playing forward who puts the team first. But soon there may be no team; if the school levy fails, sports programs, along with plenty else, including some of the teachers, will be gone. So Tess becomes involved with something besides sports: getting the levy passed. But can she score? FitzGerald takes a serious subject--school finance problems--mixes it with plenty of action-filled sports, and frosts the whole thing with best friends and rivals. The result is just what kids, especially girl jocks, want: a fast-moving, true-to-life, amusing take on school life. The dialogue is especially spot-on, even without the use of swearwords (FitzGerald comes close, but manages to find clever ways to avoid the actual words). Plenty of girls play sports, yet few writers tackle fiction for them. Happily, FitzGerald serves it up with ease. Ilene Cooper

1.0 out of 5 stars Gratuitous sexual references, January 12, 2010
By
This review is from: Soccer Chick Rules (Paperback)
We bought this book as a gift for our fifth-grade daughter who is a soccer fanatic. The publisher reviews indicated that the audience was "girl-jocks" and that the book sends an important message to any girl with a passion or a cause. When we received the book, we flipped through it and it seemed okay. Then, when I was about to wrap the gift, I happened to flip open to Chapter 11 which spends a few pages describing Tess's classmates' Halloween costumes -- pushup-bra wearing/belly baring/barely dressed angels; a mammogram machine with instructions; someone with condoms stuck to his sweats. The Halloween discussion was supposed to be funny, I suppose, but there wasn't any point, and it's not something my soccer-loving daughter needs to read right now. And it certainly didn't add to any "important message." There may be other such references in the book, but I didn't check. We're sending the book back.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Sports Lovers Dream Book ! !, February 3, 2010
This review is from: Soccer Chick Rules (Paperback)
If your daughter loves sports she will love this book ! My 6th grade twin daughters and their friends have read the book numerous times and loved it.

In this day and age it is hard to find good sports books for girls. This one is awesome! The book has great sports action. It also has wonderful, real, school kid situations, stories and dialogue. The fast paced conversations between Tess and her friends are funny, witty and sounds like real kids do today.

I think the School Library Journal and BookList reviews hit it right on the head. It is a great book that teaches kids lessons in life about perserverance, fighting for good causes and how to get involved in issues that affect the community, like getting a levy passed.

There is lots of good sports for the girl athletes, but every girl, jock or not, can learn lessons about standing up for your rights and working together with others for the good of all.

I'd give this book TEN STARS if Amazon would let me!
