Grade 3 Up?Men's World Cup Soccer was played in France in early summer of this year. This book will appeal to those fans who followed the outcome. Baddiel begins with a history of soccer and then moves on to rules and techniques. Great teams and players from the various countries competing are highlighted. The concluding chapters cover World Cup games from 1930 to the present. Colorful photos in the familiar DK format are interspersed throughout the text, which is presented in capsulelike paragraphs. Trivia questions enhance reader involvement. A World Cup "fill-in" poster that can easily be removed is attached to the back cover. However, the sticker on the front cover advertising the poster is almost impossible to remove. This is a book about the Men's World Cup?a mere four-to-five paragraphs mention that women have a similar tournament. Consider purchasing if all the books purchased back in 1994, when the U.S. hosted this event, were well used.?Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA

Gr. 5^-9. This celebratory look at soccer details the sport's popularity throughout the world. Beginning with a brief history of the game and an explanation of changes in the rules since they were first adopted in 1862, Baddiel discusses techniques and tactics, including goalkeeping, defending, and attacking. Subsequent sections look at some of the great teams and players throughout history, followed by a chronology of the World Cup tournaments, including a list of the finalists, pictures of the winning teams, and highlights. Numerous photos show players in action and teams celebrating victories. Although the strategy illustrations show soccer players who are eight or nine years old, this comprehensive volume is more suitable for older children. An excellent resource for young soccer enthusiasts eager to know more about this international sport. World Cup trivia, U.S. soccer history, a "Test Your Knowledge" quiz, a soccer player of the year list, international tournament winners, and the laws of the game are appended.
