Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Soccer is universal: that is the simple yet poignant theme of Soccer: The Game and the World Cup, a celebration of the unifying force of the world's most popular game. Alan I. Rothenberg says in the foreword that the purpose of this book is to "celebrate our game--the world game--as well as the world's greatest stars." This detailed compendium is filled with over 200 action-packed photos of the best players around the globe as well as essays from a number of soccer icons. World Cup announcer Seamus Malign writes about growing up with soccer and listening to it on the "wireless" as a child, and Jim Trecker contributes two fine essays that define the game and the history of the World Cup, from the inaugural competition in Uruguay in 1930 to a preview of the 1998 World Cup in France. The second half of the book focuses on the stars of the American game, including essay contributions from noteworthy players. Some of the highlights include Kasei Keller's narrative on goalkeeping and Eddie Pope's doctrine on how to defend. Attention is also given to the growth of the women's game, heralded by the U.S. team's triumphant Olympic exploits. --Jeremy Storey

From School Library Journal

YA-This appealing paperback covers the development of soccer with a primary emphasis on the World Cup. Black-and-white photos depict the early matches, phasing into lavishly colored photos and lengthening paragraphs of coverage through 1994. Although the 1998 competition hosted by France is not included, there are photographs and details of this year's qualifying games. A 16-page segment covers women's soccer and the women's World Cup games to be played in the United States in the summer of 1999. A handsome package that shows what the sport offers.
