4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read!
The Soccer Mom Myth is a well-written, easy to read, fun, and very informative book. 3.0 out of 5 stars not worth the hype
despite the cover design, i bought this book. if you know little, this book may help provide some insight, otherwise there's nothing groundbreaking here. it's a pretty boring read, but at least there are no bad or wrong conclusions drawn.

The Soccer Mom Myth is a well-written, easy to read, fun, and very informative book. It's full of relevant and eye-opening information and includes many annecdotes and case studies that really illustrate the point that Holly and Michelle are trying to make. My business partner and I have started to incorporate many of their ideas and suggestions into our marketing and business plans for a new start-up. Thanks Holly and Michelle!
My only reason for not giving this book a full five stars is that I would have liked a references section listing the resources and research that they used in compiling their data.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insight-based Marketing, April 2, 2008

This review is from: The Soccer Mom Myth (Hardcover)
Hit-you-between-the-eyes memorable. The personal anecdotes and business case studies that both Michele Miller and Holly Buchanan bring to this material will do more than cause chuckles, they'll create ah-has and take-aways for every major point in the book. Whether it's a personal story about shared tequila shots in the bathroom or a business story about Victory Lady Gyms, each anecdote displaces the "white bear"/stereotypes the reader couldn't help but think about with even more memorable - and more accurate - mental images.

But let me be up front, I'm a colleague of Holly Buchanan's at Future Now, so I'm not exactly unbiased. On the other hand, Michele and Holly had some things going against them when I opened the cover, as well. While I expected fabulous insights into marketing to women (and got them), I also expected to experience a been-there-done-that ennui when reading about my stock-in-trade of Persona-based marketing and business/consumer research. Boy was I wrong on that! The section on third-wave research techniques alone is worth the price of the book. And the chapters on Personas and Scenario-planning offer a unique understanding of both these tools. The material was not only first rate, but was a delight to read, even for a jaded SOB. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sound Research, Well Written and very helpful insights for anyone trying to reach women in the marketplace, March 24, 2008
By
This review is from: The Soccer Mom Myth (Hardcover)
I sat down to read this book thinking I might pick up an insight or two, but nothing more. I mean, I've been selling to women for nearly 18 years so how much more could I possibly learn. Well after 3 chapters I realize how much more there was to know. Especially when it comes to selling to women over the internet.
And yet, this book is more than just about selling. It explains why the quality of your product is the most important aspect in reaching the female audience as well as specific suggestions than any business can incorporate.
This is a wonderful resource for anyone who wants to understand what women REALLY want from a company and/or website.

3.0 out of 5 stars If the Soccer Mom is a Myth, then why repeat the theme throughtout the book?, September 16, 2008

This book makes a number of relevant points. However, I kept asking myself why on earth do they have this red high-heel and soccer ball of *every* *single* chapter, if they are basing their central thesis on the fact that women cannot be easily be labeled and categorized using words like "soccer moms"; the usage of this repeating photography just didn't make sense to me at all. I would go so far as to say it distracted me as I was reading this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars An idea generating, slap-you-on-the-back-of-the-head book for both sexes to read., April 4, 2008

Buy the book. You'll have ideas floating in your head of how you can market differently to attract women (and men).

When it comes to marketing, there are books that tell you a lot of stats with no meat. Then, there are books that tell you what you should do but don't back it up with any reasoning. Miller and Buchanan provide real world examples of what they have done - very successfully - and what you can do to align your marketing with women. They even hit on the topic of how your marketing will affect (read: help) your marketing to men. But, they don't stop there.

The authors tell you why they say what they say in such a way that when you put the book down, you'll have generated your own ideas and thoughts of how to apply it to your business - it's a breath of air after a crisp sunrise.

4.0 out of 5 stars At least it was the best of 3 purchased "marketing for women" books, August 21, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Soccer Mom Myth (Hardcover)
It is inspiring, makes you turn pages, there are things worth to read and think about. Entertaining, probably if you do marketing for living, you could know half of these things,or could come to similar conclusions and techniques based on "personas" by your own experience. I think it is fresh. They do not repeat themselves, they do not advertise their own business (just a bit):), they do not give headers and nothing inside, but sort of referral "details and quality, profound decisions we discuss in our office ,please)- opposite 2 other books that I bought at the same day here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading...and re-reading, June 5, 2009
This review is from: The Soccer Mom Myth (Hardcover)
I read this book when it first came out and thought it was great. I underlined ideas within the book that I thought were especially helpful. Ironically, I picked it up again about three weeks ago and noticed that so much of what I underlined had found its way into our work. I judge a business book as successful if it provides at least three ideas you can actually use to your advantage. In this book I found over a dozen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Marketing with Heart, November 23, 2008
This review is from: The Soccer Mom Myth (Hardcover)
Holly and Michele did an excellent job of presenting a clear, concise and compelling case for us to discover and/or create new ways of communicating in the marketplace. Read the book and you'll get detailed insight into getting that whether you're wanting to connect with women or men, it's about being authentic, in integrity and transparent. Holly and Michele want us to get that if you want people to take your message to heart, they need to know you're coming from your heart.

The book is excellent especially if you're looking to market products on the Internet.

1.0 out of 5 stars I'm returning this, I suggest you don't waste your time, September 13, 2008
This review is from: The Soccer Mom Myth (Hardcover)
This book is all theory and very little, if any, applicable advice.

It bounces around and doesn't have a consistent or focused message. Half the time this book was promoting 'Waiting for Your Cat To Bark' and citing examples from that book. Well I didn't buy THAT book I bought THIS book.

I've bought plenty of books from Amazon before and this one I'm actually going to return because of how awful it is.

I ordered the package deal of this book and the "Marketing to Women" book by Marti Barletta and although she seems to have an axe to grind with guys in her book, IT IS 10 TIMES BETTER than the Soccer Mom Misprint.

Save yourself the money and time, DON'T buy this book or buy it but don't cry to me when you don't find anything useful with it.
