This provides coaches with 68 restart plays and 48 variations devised by some of the most successful soccer coaches throughout England and the USA. It contains winning plays from three categories: free kicks, corner kicks and throw-ins and kick-offs. For each easy-to-use play, readers are given a complete diagram, the formation for beginning to play and a full description of the procedure. Where variations appear, each has a separate diagram to make positioning and procedure clear. The plays range from easy to complex, most can be used at all levels of competition. In addition to the plays, there is information on tactics for each type of restart play. The authors are both successful coaches and provide a brief introduction to the rules that cause a restart, describe the defences coaches and players might encounter and give basic attacking principles.

About the Author

Malcolm Simon and John Reeves combine more than 50 years of soccer coaching expertise in their newest coaches guide, Soccer Restart Plays. Two of America's top coaches, Simon and Reeves are the editors of three other highly acclaimed Human Kinetics soccer books: Select Soccer Drills, Coaches Collection of Soccer Drills, and The Soccer Games Book.

Malcolm Simon is the director of physical education and athletics at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He has coached soccer, basketball, tennis, and volleyball in college, camp, and YMCA settings since 1954. His teams include NAIA national champions and runners-up. Sixteen of his players have been named to All-America teams, and five have gone on to play professional soccer nationally and internationally, including Hernan "Chico" Borja. Simon is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and the Intercollegiate Soccer Association of America.

John Reeves has been coaching soccer since 1961 at both the youth and collegiate levels. Currently the director of intercollegiate athletics and physical education at Columbia University, Reeves is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and is past-president of the Intercollegiate Soccer Association of America. He was twice named New Jersey Soccer Coach of the Year. While soccer is primarily a dynamic sport with ever-changing positions and opportunities, there are moments that can be scripted - dead ball situations. "Soccer Restart Plays" describes in detail how any team can effectively take advantage of these golden moments and create excellent scoring opportunities. Clear diagrams of corner kick, direct and indirect kicks and throw-ins detail actions and responsibilities of key players. I have coached teams that scored twice in the final at the USA Cup on plays from this book! I high recommend it to any serious coach. Scott Lockwood

This book was a tremedous resource for our team this year. It made the difference in our set pieces and gave the players confidence in executing them. Everytime we were awarded a free kick or corner kick the players truly saw it as an opportunity to score - and very often we did. Easy to understand and useful diagrams.

If you're an expert coach with a team of skilled U14 or older players, you may find value in this book. The diagrams are detailed, explanations and tips are minimal and overall it has not proved to be helpful to me in coaching my u10 travelling team. The restart chapter in Alan Hargreaves' indispensable "Skills and Strategies for Coaching Soccer" proved to be much more helpful.
