Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Sega Soccer Slam may mention the beautiful sport in its title, but you’ll not find any competition here for the FIFAs or Pro Evolutions of this world. This is pure arcade soccer: loud, colorful, completely unrealistic, yet soooo much fun. Gameplay is simple: three-a-side fast footie action. You can head, dummy, slide tackle, shoot, pass, and conjure some quite unbelievable super-special shots using button combos and shot gauges. The pace is frenetic, with most games being tense 9-7 affairs. The soccer action plays really well.

The game is similar in style to Virtua Tennis in concept, though a lot less serious. Modes of play are standard: arcade, tournament, quest, etc. Play out the quest mode and the similarity to the aforementioned tennis title is clear. You select one of six preset teams based on continent and elemental power. Fire, water, toxic, spirit, electric, and ice form the special powers that each team can unleash on the pitch.

Teams are taken on in a round-robin style league with a special challenge offered to you after each match. The challenges are fun and in the style of Virtua Tennis--complete each one and you’ll be given cash to spend in the shop, where you can purchase kit upgrades, new grounds, game artwork, and more. Win the leagues and you'll be able to unlock extra hidden teams. Other game modes allow you to create a personalized super team and unlock more characters.

The game's graphics are excellent and each player is instantly recognizable with great animations and detail. The stadiums are well animated and the sound effects are vibrant. The game oozes Sega quality. All in all, Sega Soccer Slam is ideal for those less serious sessions and for pick-up-and-play gaming. --Laurent S. Hall

5.0 out of 5 stars multiplayer is where it's at!, March 20, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Soccer Slam (Video Game)
I don't even like soccer, and I probably wouldn't ever buy a "real" soccer simulation, but this game is a blast. Or more specifically, the multiplayer game is a blast! I've only played solo a few times, and it can be entertaining-- but nothing compares to the 4 player slug fest that ensues when you get all of the controllers going. The rivalries that we've created in a mere 48 hours are as formidable as those of the Bears/Packers or Knicks/Pacers. And nothing will enrage your opponent more than forcing him to watch the replay of you taking him to school-- all the way through!

I had to throw people out of my house at 4am this morning so I could sleep, and I look forward to doing it again tonight. I mean, I can't say "No" when my friends call up tonight wanting to redeem El Diablo, or kick Lola in the teeth one more time.

Bottom Line- If you've been staring at the Gamecube and your 4 controllers thinking, "Smash Bros. Melee and Monkey Ball are fun, but did I really need all of the extra controllers?", then this is the game for you. I've played SSBM extensively, and I have to say that this is definitely #1 when it comes to multi-player on the Cube-- definitely!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Multiplayer Action!, March 30, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Soccer Slam (Video Game)
Today I received a copy of Sega Soccer Slam. Here are my impressions...

Wow!

What a great job Black Box/Visual Concepts have done.

The graphics are pleasant to the eye, while not breath-taking. The most impressive aspect graphic wise to me are the characters themselves, especially while using the L button to power up.

The sound on this puppy is excellent. The first time you hear the fast "bagpipe jingle" while playing with the Volta, you can't help but smile. Some catchy tunes are found everywhere. Great one liners, btw.

I guess my only real complaint about the game is number of teams/courses. It would have been nice to have about twice as much of both, but it's doesn't hurt the overall quality of the game much. Also, the control system can be quirky at times, but nothing too annoying.

Bottom Line: This game is fun. If you have 1, 2, or 3 friends, this game is a must buy. If there ever is a Soccer Slam 2 (and there should be), I'll make sure I'm first in line to pick it up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sega Soccer is back again!!, May 26, 2002
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Soccer Slam (Video Game)
Look out! The best soccer game on the market for gamecube is here! Wow, I don't know were to start! There is so much that is great about this game! The graphics are exellent. Another thing great about this game is the codes you can get. Quest mode is the Season play in this game. You can choose one of 6 All-Star teams with awesome 3 on 3 gameplay. This multi-player game is the only sports game to match-up to NHL Hitz. Each player has it's own attitude and strengths. Plus, no penalties! You can go up and slide tackle the golie or hit opponents. The games are usually high scoring but they're close! Each team has it's own Homefeild, but each are based on each team. You can also earn money (only in Guest mode) to buy items to strengthen you're players! A great game this is, so go to [a local video rental store] and rent this game!
