This review is from: The Soccer Tribe (Hardcover)
This is the best book I have read about soccer. I am amazed that it is out of print. Author should update it without delay. With soccer being the world game, also emerging dramatically in USA and Australia sales of the book would skyrocket, especially if it is updated.Great pictures, great story.

Soccer from the inside by an outsider,
By E.J.H.T. van Cann (Roermond, The Netherlands) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Soccer Tribe (Hardcover)
By viewing soccer as a complete outsider Desmond Morris succeeds in a brilliant way in getting a total picture that's very valuable even for the professional. An amazing book, very funny too. I really can't understand it isn't available anymore. I read it in dutch and I would like to read it in the original English language.

Freud plays at inside left,
By Sean D'Souza (Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Soccer Tribe (Hardcover)
The soccer tribe is a unique view on the game of football (soccer) in the United Kingdom in the 1970s and 1980s.The premise of author, Desmond Morris, was to examine the game as a sociological force. The results are illuminating. Both to those familiar with football and those who may be baffled by devotion and mania that accompanies such a simple ball game. Dr Morris' book has taken on iconic status with many followers of football, but unfortunately has it dated rather badly. Much of the football revolution of the 90s, when football attracted from the so called 'middle-classes', post-date the last edition of the book. Also (if one is to be harsh) some of the analysis is overly Freudian and stretched rather thin. None the less, "The Soccer Tribe" is an interesting read - mandatory for students of pop-culture and football fans hungry for nostalgia.
