5.0 out of 5 stars Great Explanation of the flat back four!
I thought that this book did a great job explaining the strageties of the flat back four in the 4-4-2 system. The book does have a lot of charts, drawings in it, but it does explain how its done. It gives you exercises that you can do to help teach your players how to execute the formations. This is NOT a beginner level soccer book. I am going to use this informatin...

1.0 out of 5 stars Indigestible prose
I bought the book to help my high school daughter understand the game better. I might as well have bought her something by James Joyce. The book was clearly written in another language, Italian by the looks of it, and the translation must have been done with Google Translate. The prose is absolutely impenetrable. No attempt was made to pass it in front of an English...

This review is from: Soccer's 4-4-2 System (Paperback)
I bought the book to help my high school daughter understand the game better. I might as well have bought her something by James Joyce. The book was clearly written in another language, Italian by the looks of it, and the translation must have been done with Google Translate. The prose is absolutely impenetrable. No attempt was made to pass it in front of an English editor of even the most limited ability. Randomly chosen passage:

"The two strikers must think and move in a coordinated way, respecting the distance from the mid field section and putting pressure on their opponents with the aim of either regaining possession in an advantageous position for their team or slowing down the opposition's plays so that their defense and mid field can get back into the best positions from which to carry out the defense phase."

Diagram that sentence, if you can!

The book has good content, but to get anything out of it, I'm going to have to rewrite the applicable sections myself. With all the editors available to review books, this is inexcusable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for all coaches working at 11 vs 11, October 2, 2011

The difference between good coaches and great coaches is their attention to detail and books of this kind encourages coaches to think more specifically about every section of play. The best thing is that not only is the information detailed but their are specific examples of how to teach each section of the team!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!, March 21, 2011

This review is from: Soccer's 4-4-2 System (Paperback)
This book explains the 4-4-2 system step by step in a very understandable way. It starts with the different roles of the players and the attitute they should assume during the attack or defense modes. there are a lot of exercises, supported by diagrams that show how to train the defenders, midfileders and forwards. It also teaches you how to face another 4-4-2 and other soccer systems. I have graded all the exercises while I read them (from 1 t0 5) and most of them have gotten 5s and 4s, just a few have 3s. I recommend this book to any coach who wants to do a great job in the soccer field!

I thought I'd supplement my tactical knowledge with this poorly written book.

Trying to adapt charts full of x's and o's into one's game plane is a complete waste of time.
