Great summer activity project!,
By Lemelia J. Bonner (Cary, NC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Social Skills Activities: for Secondary Students with Special Needs (Paperback)
I stumbled upon this book while looking for resources on NLD (nonverbal learning disorder), which has caused my bright, 12-year-old son to flounder both academically and socially since fourth grade. It is FULL of excellent activities for children who have difficulty picking up social cues and interacting appropriately with their peers. Because my son works so hard during the regular school year, and typical summer programs and camps only cause him anxiety, we now opt to let him just take time off from organized activity during his summer breaks. But he will be assisting in the family home business, and now we plan to incorporate the exercises in this book into his daily schedule. They are interesting and fun, and even I look forward to working on them.Brian's Mom

The people behind this book worked hard to expand on their topics in a realistic way. I can easily use the majority of their topics as I work with with teen-age students. The information that is presented is not too simple for students who are in regular education classes, even though it was designed for special education students. The age-appropriate activities and topics bring on discussion that is neccesary for students as they work towards better interactions with others.

I have two stepsons, ages 10, one with PDD-NOS and the other with Aspergers. We have done the first two lessons with my stepson who has PDD-NOS and it is really covering subjects that are vital to his social success. The book approaches them in fairly mature ways that are still simple enough for him. I think it would be appropriate for children older than him but I liked this book for him more than the other version for younger children. I think he is right on the edge for age appropriate for this book, so I would recommend it for over 10 years.

Great book! I am using this with my 5th grade son who has attention issues as well as my 4th grade son. The book is very user friendly. It teaches skills I would not necessarily think of - but useful. I definitely think this will improve both of their social skills.

I recently used this book for a camp for youth and adults with developmental challenges. We quite enjoyed it although there were some of the lessons that were a little confusing even for me. Overall it is a great resource for addressing many of the areas that the participants were weak in.

I would like to recommend this book for all Professional and parents who are assisting individuals with Aspergers or and ASD condition. This is an easy to use and very practical resource that I have personally found to be very effective. I am responsible for a Outreach Service to individuals with a diagnosis of Aspergers Syndrome in Ireland. I look forward to other resources for this author.

This book really doesn't apply (except for a FEW pages) to my students. It's more for teens who are higher functioning or not at all mentally challenged. I can see for troubled teens that it would be helpful.
