Expected or Unexpected ... Make it a Game!, June 7, 2009
This review is from: Social Behavior Mapping (Paperback)
I love Michelle Garcia Winner -- I saw her talk at the Geneva Centre's Autism 2008 Conference in Toronto. She puts social behaviour under the terms "Expected" and "Unexpected" (versus "Right" and "Wrong"). I really like this and it has really gotten through to my 8 year old Aspie. We actually primed for this book by reading Michelle's other book called "You are a Social Detective", which, again, uses the terms "expected" and "unexpected". "You are a social Detective" is a bright, colourful (sorry, I'm Canadian, I spell colour and behaviour with a u), with cartoon pictures like the Simpsons. I put it on Stephen's bed and he read it himself. He really picked up on the Expected Vs Unexpected language to talk about Social interactions. Next, we followed up with this book "Social Behavioral Mapping", but instead of reading it like a textbook or making it into a lesson (oh, no Mom, not another "work session"), we turned it into a game. Michelle has many social situations described, and I let Stephen pick the scenario (i.e. going on a plane ride). Then I read a behaviour, either from the "expected" page or "unexpected" page and ask him whether it is expected or unexpected. Then I ask him why. It is actually really funny, because even though Stephen always puts his feet on the chair of the person ahead of us while riding on a plane (and I constantly tell him not to), he thinks this and other "unexpected" behaviours are hilarious (and obviously unexpected) when I read them to him. We split our guts laughing at the "unexpected behaviours" because, reading them from a book, they are so obvious, while in real life, he still does many of these. My plan is the learning process: theory down first, then we practise. This book is an excellent resource for description of many, many social situations and many behaviours: appropriate and inappropriate. I love the terminology that Michelle uses and I love the fact that I can use this book as a game! (Oh, and guess what terminology that I am now using when he behaves inappropriately socially? "Stephen, is that an expected behaviour, or unexpected?")

Social Behavior Mapping Book, July 3, 2010
This review is from: Social Behavior Mapping (Paperback)
An excellent tool to not only teach what is appropriate behavior for those kids that struggle with this issue, but it teaches more importantly WHY. It teaches the emotional connection of why people react the way they do.
