Book Description

May 28, 2007
Nicholas St. Vincent is disaffected by an endless supply of trust fund money, drugs and easy sex from alienated young women charmed by his looks, money and connections as they yearn to belong to something more than what their otherwise dreary lives can offer through the Goth night he runs within the enclave of his nightclub. After endless verbal abuse and emotional blackmail, he will soon find he went too far when his girlfriend, an aspiring fetish model willing to reach the top forms an unlikely alliance with his former lover, a drug abusing DJ after receiving a letter in the mail warning them to get tested for STD's. Confused about her sexuality and falling hard for her new and immoral conspirator as she tries to break the hold of prescription pills and her former boyfriend, one woman is forced to face fears masked by drugs and escapism.

2.0 out of 5 stars eh, March 2, 2008
This review is from: Social Disease (Paperback)
Eh.

Okay, its not terrible...but I can honestly say this wasn't one of my favorite books of all time. The plot is relatively simple: Nicholas is the guy to be seen with. He has it all; wealth, connections and his very own club. He also has a taste for drugs and treating his girlfriends like crap before he kicks them to the curb. The two main characters are Steenie, Nicholas's current girlfriend, and Stephanie, one of his bitter exes. Both girls share one thing in common: they're tired of the way he controls them. One is an aspiring model, the other an aspiring DJ, and Nicholas uses his connections to get them ahead, and then threatens to blackball them to keep them in his back pocket so to speak. Originally Steenie and Stephanie don't care much for each other, but when they both receive letters from the Dept of Health advising them to be tested for STD's, the girls come together in their dislike for Nicholas. From here they plot to bring him down; to not only get his club closed, but to make him look like the total jerk that he is as well.

The plot itself was interesting enough, and I did stay engaged with that part of the book from start to finish. The writing itself though didn't flow for me. It comes across as choppy and disjointed, leaving the reader feeling the characters are underdeveloped and the plot is confusing. There were several times while I was reading that I found myself confused by the dialogue as well.

The story has potential; I think what it needs is just a strong editing job and a slight revision. If you're looking for a quick read that will keep you up to par in the goth/club world of today; this is your story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Social Disease, November 21, 2008
This review is from: Social Disease (Paperback)
Social Disease by Lisa Cavalear is a peculiar look into the lives of a couple of girls that have been used, pushed aside, threatened, and are now planning the death of club owner Nicholas St. Vincent. After receiving a letter in the mail from the board of health, both girls must go get tested for STD's, and now the lives of an aspiring model and hopeful DJ are now in jeopardy.

Social Disease for me, was not that engrossing. While there were some engaging points and drama, it felt more like reading a how to manual. I mean everything was laid out step by step, it lacked detail, and in the very beginning when switching from Steenie to Stephanie's perspective I sometimes got confused on who was who and doing what. I think for a debut novel, it was ok but I hope that if Ms. Cavalear continues to write, that she will put forth more detail into her characters making them more picturable and watch the number of run on sentences. I would say this is in the young adult category, but may also appear to people in their mid 30's. 3 Hearts

I loved this book from start to finish. The charecters felt very real and I actually cared and wanted to find out what would happen to them. I couldn't put it down.
