4.0 out of 5 stars what a lovely book!
The Mappes/Zembaty reader has everything one would want in an introductory primer on ethics and social policy. The editors have collected well-argued and important essays by philosophers, jurists and laymen on most of the politically charged topics of today, from abortion to pornography to environmentalism. Unfortunately, the book has not been updated to include any...

2.0 out of 5 stars Shamelessly Overpriced
As a college professor who teaches ethics, I am not exaggerating when I say that I am virtually forced to order at least 70 copies of this book every semester. Why? Students like the format and articles more than those in any other introductory book I have been able to find. The short introductions for each essay are probably the most salient reason for this...

This review is from: Social Ethics: Morality and Social Policy (Paperback)
The Mappes/Zembaty reader has everything one would want in an introductory primer on ethics and social policy. The editors have collected well-argued and important essays by philosophers, jurists and laymen on most of the politically charged topics of today, from abortion to pornography to environmentalism. Unfortunately, the book has not been updated to include any treatment of behaviors made newly possible by the Internet; perhaps a newer edition will accommodate this angle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Social Ethics, October 7, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Dense read, but very insightful. Seller was up-front about the condition of the book. If you're taking an ethics course, this is definitely a good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for the classroom, November 9, 2009

I am taking a social ethics class and I needed this book for the class. While it is a textbook, it is still an excellent resource for those needing information on social ethics. It is very informative and extremely helpful for research.

2.0 out of 5 stars Shamelessly Overpriced, August 3, 2011
This review is from: Social Ethics: Morality and Social Policy (Paperback)
As a college professor who teaches ethics, I am not exaggerating when I say that I am virtually forced to order at least 70 copies of this book every semester. Why? Students like the format and articles more than those in any other introductory book I have been able to find. The short introductions for each essay are probably the most salient reason for this over-priced book's popularity. As every teacher knows, students generally do required reading for a course during an all-night extravaganza the night before the final exam. Thus, they are never prepared for a rational discussion on any given day. Therefore, a brief summary of the day's discussion topic provides (in their minds) a way of passing over the essay itself and still avoid being busted. Nonetheless, even my students have started getting miffed at the price of the latest edition, just another flimsy paperback. In fact, they were the ones who brought this problem to my attention. And they are entirely justified in their anger.
But it gets worse. I compared the "new" edition to the previous one, and they were, on the whole, the same book. It's ironic: two ethicists succumb to their own greed, by taking advantage of debt-strapped college students.
A tip: the same rip-off is being conducted with a book called Virtue and Vice

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent, October 2, 2010

It came pretty quick, but in an envelope and there was a lot of bending and writing in the book, but over all it was ok.

3.0 out of 5 stars Another Overpriced College Book, May 25, 2009
Book required for a college course. Should be around $25 - not $71! Would not have purchased if not needed for school.

Very quick delievery to my house, plenty of time before school. A little more hi-liting than I previously anticipated, but overall good condition.

I was very disappointed with this purchase. Since several pages were missing and there has been a lot of highlighting going on, I don't think that the description of the book as "like new" was truthful. Would not recommend that you purchase anything from this seller.
