Psychotic Waltz was the seminal prog technical metal. However, they disbanded in 1997 which made their albums, each of them released under different labels, to become rare items. In 2004 Metal Blade has released all the four albums in two different packages. To this date, these packages became rare items as well, just look at the prices they are being sold. However, they are worth buying. There are two different things to review: the re-released package and the albums them selves.

The new package contains 2 CDs and 1 DVD:
------------------------------------------

"A Social Grace" ( their first album )
"Mosquito" ( their 3rd album )
DVD with rare live footage and two video clips.

The package cover merges the covers of the two albums in a fantastic way. While both albums differ in their musical direction, in certain ways they are connected just like this cover.

The albums them selves
---------------------

"A Social Grace" is considered by many fans their best effort. It is very heavy while it contains all their technical guitar playing and astonishing vocal melodies. Buddy Lackey ( now called Devon Graves of Dead Soul Tribe) is one of the best singers on this planet, not just because his incredible vocal range, his flute interventions but for his interpretations and incredible lyrics.

If you look at the layers of the songs they will look like a psychedelic and technical Judas Priest / Maiden/ Sabbath version, but then after several CD playings, all the reminiscent elements are gone and all you get is a raw , complex, heavy and technical effort. Ward Evans and Norm Leggio make some amazing bass/drums interplay.

This band comes from a time of incredibly talented musicianship. I was introduced to Psychotic Waltz through my aunt as a young teenager going to their concerts in San Diego, (she knew some band members personally) and honestly it is still to this day some of the best music I have ever heard. I miss seeing them play and hearing their music live. I was very lucky to be exposed to such music at such a young age, and fourteen years later, I still crave the sounds of their guitar as well as hearing the lyrics. I would recommend this group to anyone who likes rock and/or metal. Although, you do not have to be a fan of metal to like psychotic waltz.

I compared Russian prog death metalers Hieronymus Bosch to these guys, even though Psychotic Waltz are clearly prog thrash. These guys are just amazing, in the same way Watchtower were/are amazing. They released four albums and I purchased all four in the two boxset packages they come in. This is their 1st and 3rd album, both are amazing, both are very different yet the same. They are extremely well produced, the song structure and writing is outstanding and above par. They are well versed on their instruments and play as with aplomb. Get all their albums if you like prog metal and prog thrash -they were the originators but they gave us four very strong albums.
