Social Inequality is all around us, and its impact on our lives and the social structure of the United States is unmistakable. Changes brought about by technology and globalization have affected international inequality and the socioeconomic position of the Unites States in the world. It is unavoidable that these world-wide changes now occurring will affect all of us. The sixth edition of Social Inequality: Forms, Causes, and Consequences is intended as a user-friendly introduction to the study of social inequality. My goal is to convey as simply, but as compellingly as I can, a sense of the pervasiveness and extensiveness of social inequality in the United States within a comparative context, to show how inequality can be explained, how it affects all of us, and what is being done about it. About the Author

Charles E. Hurst grew up on the ethnic south-side of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and his experiences there fostered a life-long interest in social inequality and social theory.  He earned his Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and later his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut.  He retired in 2008 as Professor of Sociology from The College of Wooster, after having taught courses on inequality in America and social theory for over 40 years.  His research resulted in articles on class consciousness, status inconsistency, and socioeconomic status and health care, and most recently, Amish society.  His books include The Anatomy of Social Inequality (C. V. Mosby 1979), Living Theory:  The Application of Classical Social Theory to Contemporary Life, 2nd edition (Allyn & Bacon 2005), and Social Inequality:  Forms, Causes and Consequences, 7th edition (Allyn & Bacon 2010).  During the last several years, his interest in social inequality led him to conduct research on issues related to women’s status, wealth, and class distinctions within the Ohio Amish community.  With a colleague, he has completed the first in-depth study of this settlement, soon to be published by Johns Hopkins University Press as An Amish Paradox:  Diversity and Change in the World’s Largest Amish Community.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic University Level Text on the Subject, November 7, 2010
This is one of the classic college level texts on the subject. Indispensible for the study of this subject and includes many types of inequity in the United States and its causes and impacts. Without this book you could spend days looking for some of the statistical data presented here detailing inequality in the United States. Often cited for documentation.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poorly researched, often inaccurate and offensive, November 29, 2009
It's ironic that a text called "Social Inequality" perpetuates so many of the beliefs that lead to social inequality, which is somewhat dangerous given that this book is often used as the main resource in college courses. I couldn't believe that this book made it out of editing, much less to a 7th edition - in every single chapter, there were inaccuracies and offensive stereotypes of different groups of people. In an attempt to appear neutral, the text actually gives credence to some really offensive ideas (for example, in trying to portray both sides of the debates around racial profiling, actually put forth the idea that black people may just be inherently more criminal - what?!). This is a truly awful book and I hope that instructors stop using it for courses.
