Whether you're new to social media or have been using it for years, this book will show you tools to help your school engage more efficiently, safely and strategically with its community. Many school administrators have tried to ignore and even block social media's power, but clearly that won't work any longer. Social Media for School Leaders is a smart tool to help you reach your community where they are - on social media.

Dr. Brian J Dixon is an educator in Baton Rouge Louisiana with a doctoral degree in educational technology from San Diego State University, and the author of Social Media for School Leaders. He is also the founder of the Mentorship-Academy - a project-based, technology-focused charter school in Baton Rouge. The focus at this school is to provide a student-centered learning place to help under-served students prepare for success in college and beyond. He is currently a school leader at two public high schools in Baton Rouge.
In 2012 he published the book, Social Media for School Leaders – A Comprehensive Guide to Getting the most out of Facebook, Twitter, and Other essential Web Tools. The word “Comprehensive” is in the subtitle of this book, and the use of this word is appropriate by all means. Dr. Dixon goes into great depth on a number of social media tools that can be used in education; Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, School Websites, E-Mail, and Blogs just to name a few. For each of these tools he describes how the tool works, the benefits of using the tool, how it can be used to connect with others, and how to begin using the tool in your school.
In the introduction he notes the shift from one-way communication (broadcasting) to two-way communication (conversation) made possible by new web-based technologies. He goes on by explaining why two-way communication is a good thing, more specifically, why schools should engage with social media. He addresses the potential barriers to adopting social-media tools and lays out a foundational framework for social media success.
One thing that stuck out to me in the introduction is that Dr. Dixon acknowledged the use of this book as reference guide.

If you want to use social media to engage families and students and to introduce your school to prospective students and their families, this book is an excellent resource. The author offers a helpful framework for understanding what social media can do for your school: awareness, feedback, collaboration, and advocacy. Then he shows how to use each of the major social media tools (eg e-newsletters, Facebook, Twitter, school website, YouTube)to meet those goals. The author is apparently the headmaster of a private school in San Diego and he has abundant experience in using these tools for his school. The book is filled with specific examples of how to use each of the tools to meet social media goals. Bonus: the book is quite well-written. The author mentions that originally, the book was twice as long, but he cut out the "fat" (his word). Two thumbs up!
