Book Description

0073380121 978-0073380124 September 26, 2007 11th
Focusing on quality of life, this text defines what a social problem is and then addresses specific issues—for example, how can one gain a sociological understanding of social problems? What kinds of critical thinking should one engage in and what kinds should one avoid in attempting to understand social problems? How is the quality of one's life affected by particular problems? What causes these problems and how can we resolve them? Part One establishes key approaches to social problems; the remaining parts discuss the social problems that most acutely impact the quality of our lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, February 24, 2009
By
Zoestar (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews
Fantastic book. This was my third Sociology class text and I loved it. Read the whole text book (which is not normal for me). It held my attention and I still to this day have retained much of the information I received from it. If you are a visual learner like me, you will love the photos, charts, and diagrams. Best of luck!

1.0 out of 5 stars Easy is not always good., January 11, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is my first review. And what prompted me to write my first review was the experience of reading Social Problems for a sociology class. The book is not too technical, in fact it is quite an easy read, but my main and only issue with the book is its distracting bias. I am a conservative, yet I do enjoy reading liberal material because it forces me to challenge my own beliefs and question the world more; but this text goes too far. Nearly every example is one that would favor an American Liberal ideology, and any conservative counter argument is either not presented, or misrepresented and labeled a logical fallacy. Finally, a good portion of the research used in this book is out of date. Many quoted sources are from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. I know if I were to use research that outdated for a social academic paper I would be lucky to get a C.
