This review is from: Social Security Handbook 2010: Overview of Social Security Programs (Paperback)
"Then Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, 'My daughter, shall I not seek security for you, that it may be well with you?'" -- Ruth 3:1 (NKJV)For many years, the Social Security Administration has sent me a summary of my retirement benefits, assuming that I keep earning what I do now and that the laws don't change (but, alas, they do change). If I start taking benefits at different ages, the monthly payments change. A few years ago, I also began using the Social Security Web site to check out various questions I had. Sometimes I could find the answer. Often, I could not. Having eventually realized that payments vary because of the number of years payments will be received, I figured out that the present value of what I receive (as well as the likelihood of receiving it) would be higher if I started collecting sooner. So why not put in for my payment now? I decided to do some research and in the process discovered that there's a high likelihood for people who are healthy in their sixties that they will outlive the actuarial estimates of their life spans. Thus, a lot more can be collected by waiting. I'm glad I did. This wonderful book allowed me to dig into this and other complex questions I had about Social Security. Within an hour I knew everything I had been looking for and couldn't find elsewhere. Hurray! Although the book is not cheap, it may help you make a lot of extra money. It sure did for me. Thank you! |
