Customer Reviews

Mr. Blankenship's manual is a great reference to use when questions need to be answered - and an easy to use manual at that.

He does a good job of covering spousal benefits whereby the lower wage earner piggy-backs of the social security of a higher-earner spouse.

The book made me aware of many points I was ignorant of and how to work around the challenges of a meager social security qualification.

This is plainly written, but it gives a good idea of the how/what of social security. I have picked up a few pointers (and I consider myself quite knowledgeable on the subject) that is worth many times the cost of the book. One thing I always wanted to know -- HOW are the benefits determined. He lays out quite concisely the formula(s) used to determine this.

I won't be collecting Social Security for at least 7 years. I hope the information I glean from here will aid in maximizing what I am entitled to. As a small business owner, my income varies greatly from year to year. This book has provided some useful tips for this.

Mr. Blankenship takes understanding Social Security and retirement to a whole new level--he brings it right to where you are.
Written in a casual style, he takes the government's attempts to confuse us with complicated calculating and twists it into common (and sometimes humorous) language. There's a lot of facts and figures for professionals who would use them but for those of us whose eyes glaze over at the thought of doing mathematic calculations, Mr. Blankenship provides a simple to understand approach to the madness without making us do the math.
The book also provides easy to read charts and gives examples/stories to explain and that demonstrate some little known and/or utilized benefits available.
I recommend this book to anyone wanting to understand how Social Security works for them. Very easy read and full of great info.

Mr. Blankenship does an excellent job explaining the very finer points of Social Security that are often overlooked by people, as well as their advisors. The Owner's Manual is easy to read, easy to follow, and Mr. Blankenship's sense of humor adds an excellent element to what can be a dry topic. Mr. Blankenship's manual is a great reference to use when questions need to be answered - and an easy to use manual at that. Throughout the book he explains concepts and how the social benefit works - in easy to understand language. Finally, he dispells some common myths about the future of Social Security. This book should be in the home of everyone that is a part of the Social Security system - and no financial planner should be without it.

Highly useful explanation of the various aspects of Social Security benefits and the options- and consequences- of when to apply for benefits. Well worth the purchase price for anyone contemplating the start of their Social Security benefits.

If you ever wondered:
- What is this thing called SS benefit?
- How can I qualify?
- How can I maximize my SS benefit and the benefit of my survivor?
- Will SS provide me a benefit for life?
Then this is book was written for you.

Mr. Blankenship has assembled this book in a format that makes it easy to locate particular items of this complex subject. The reading was easy with near life examples, explained in terms easy to understand. Jim spreads his humor throughout the book to lighten the tense moments.

The book is in five parts that answer the questions above. For the answer to the last question Jim looks at the various discussions around our Social Security system and provides his outlook for the future of this Retirement Benefit.

My only disappointment in the book was the short index. I like to use the index when later using the book for referencing a particular item in this vast subject. But for many aspects of the SS program it is easier to find the information in this book vs the SSA website.

Short easy reading. Contains some key material that would have taken me hours of gleaning from various SSA documents. Worth the money I paid.

Jim Blankenship is the founder and principal of Blankenship Financial Planning, Ltd., a financial planning firm providing hourly, as-needed financial planning and advice. A financial services professional for over 25 years, Jim is a CFP professional and has earned the Enrolled Agent designation, a designation that qualifies him as enrolled to practice before the IRS. Jim is also a NAPFA-registered financial advisor, which designates him as a Fee-Only Financial Advisor.

Jim got into this business when his search for an objective financial advisor proved fruitless. It turns out that there were no objective financial advisors in Central Illinois who were willing to work with someone of modest means. Always a do-it-yourselfer, Jim began working to expand his knowledge in order to manage his own finances. As the quest for knowledge evolved, he discovered that he was not alone in the search for objective financial advice -- many others want and need the same kind of objectivity and knowledge that he was developing -- so Blankenship Financial Planning was launched.

Jim believes that professional, unbiased financial advice is something that all Americans need, at least periodically, to build the brightest financial futures. Holding to this philosophy, Jim is proud to offer high quality, professional financial advice to people from all walks of life.
