Democratic socialism vs. gulag (Stalinist) "socialism", August 26, 2007
This review is from: Socialism from Below (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book for anyone who wants to understand the difference between democratic -- real -- socialism and the many varieties of anti-capitalist "socialisms" which aim at the installation of a new rulng class -- whether Stalin or Castro or Pol Pot. Hal Draper, the author, also wrote "Karl Marx's Theory of Revolution", the fifth volume of which has just been published (completed by E. Haberkern.) The idea of "socialism from below" is conveyed by the great American socialist leader Eugene Victor Debs who repeatedly told his audiences: "I would not lead you into the promised land because if I did someone would lead you out." By all means for an introduction to democratic, revolutionary, socialism read Draper's book.
