By marta salvat "marta" (Miami, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: LA Sociedad Secreta Abakua (Spanish Edition) (Perfect Paperback)
The first edition of this book was released in Havana in 1959, the second in Miami in 1970 and this constitutes the third edition. The book collects the traditions of the secret Abakua Society as told to the author by old creoles in this secret sect. Naniguismo, Carabalis and all the beliefs of this secret Afro-Cuban society, brought to the Island by African slaves, is analyzed as well as its role in modern Cuban cultural history.
Lydia Cabrera (1900-1991) was a legendary Cuban ethnographer of Afro-Cuban culture and the author of many books, including El Monte, Yemaya y Ochun, Anago, Medicina Popular de Cuba, Vocabulario Congo, and many others. Her friendships with writers Teresa de la Parra and Gabriela Mistral, as well as painters Amelia Pelaez and Alejandra Exter, stimulate her talent for writing and in 1936 she publishes in French Cuentos Negros de Cuba, who were not published in Spanish until 1940. |
