Thorough Disappointment,
This review is from: Society: The Basics (9th Edition) (MySocLab Series) (Paperback)
I felt as if Macionis was trying to be uber-apologetic for what he believed are sins of the white race. I feel that he negatively stereotypes whites and Asian-Americans, bashes anthropological research, quotes himself too much, and contradicts his quotes and the quotes of sociology's greats. These faults will be obvious to anyone who processes the material rather than just memorizing for testing purposes.
Macionis emphasizes Weber's fundamental belief that when a sociologist adds their own values to their work they have moved into the political realm. He is guilty of this throughout the text. His latent function of education section is very entertaining (sarcasm). The only positive thing I can say about the book is that I was introduced to the real sociologists: Berger, Weber, Merton, Durkheim, Parsons, Liazos, etc.

At the end of every chapter their is a "study guide". It actually helps cover major points and makes learning the material easier.

Society: The basics is a very interesting textbook, full of up-to-date pictures, graphs, and demographics dealing with the subject material. Personally, I hate reading textbooks, but this book is one that can be read and understood. I don't have to re-read pages at all to comprehend information. However, this book is a textbook. If I wouldn't have needed it for my sociology class, I probably never would have read it. But overall, the book is very good and very interesting.

Before I bought this book for Sociology class I had read a review from here where the poster thought the author was discriminatory. I can see that in hints of the book. It is not a bad book, but it's not a book you just gotta have either. Some of the things he discusses is common sense and if you take notes in the class you probably won't have need for it. But back to those "hints", the author will make comments in the book about upper class people being white and so forth. Well we all know there are many upper class people of nonwhite class and the author could have kept that comment anyway.

Solid Textbook for Intro Class,

This review is from: Society: The Basics (9th Edition) (MySocLab Series) (Paperback)
I am not a fan of textbooks in general, but for intro to sociology classes, this textbook provides a good foundation. It includes text and web based supplemental materials that are quite helpful to both instructors and students.

Not a bad Textbook,
This review is from: Society: The Basics (9th Edition) (MySocLab Series) (Paperback)
Of most all textbooks that I have read, this has to be one of the most interesting. It has pop culture insertions to spark the interest of its readers and most of the information is very relative to how we live everyday so it isn't hard to understand at all.
