In the second book of Samuel, the prophet Nathan tells King David that God will give to him and his descendants a great and everlasting kingdom. In this study Schniedewind looks at how this dynastic Promise has been understood and transmitted from the time of its first appearance at the inception of the Hebrew monarchy until the dawn of Christianity. He shows in detail how, over the centuries, the Promise grew in importance and prestige. One measure of this growing importance was the Promise's ability to coax new readers into fresh interpretations.

Schniedewind analyzes the pivotal Promise to David in 2Sam 7 and demonstrates its innerbiblical tradition and significance. Excellent study for anyone interested in David, the Israelite monarchy, innerbiblical interpretaation (discourse), scribal traditions, and/or the origins of Messianic expectations in the time of Christ.

I read this book which was by one of my professors at UCLA. Well-written and fascinating. Gives a kind of intellectual history of ancient Israel and some insight into the origins and development of the bible. Definately worth reading, but not for the faint of heart.
