5.0 out of 5 stars A stellar selection of today's and yesterday's greats!, September 16, 2004
This review is from: Society of Singers: Great Voices Great Songs (Audio CD)
The track listing alone should tell you that this is a truly inspired collection. Not only is it a "Who's Who" of the great vocalists of the 20th century, but it is also a glimpse into the great voices carrying on in their tradition. Celine Dion turns in a surprisingly restrained (in a good way!) version of "Bewitched." There's no denying the timeless greatness of Sinatra's "Sweet Lorraine," Ella's "Miss Otis Regrets," and Nat's "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," to name a few. But there is soooo much more on this disc. I was unfamiliar with Aretha's take on "God Bless The Child" but was blown away by it. Little Jimmy Scott's version of "Over The Rainbow" is another highlight. Really, there isn't one bad song on this collection. Pick it up today. You won't be disappointed. Oh, and a portion of the proceeds benefit a worthy cause: The Society of Singers (www.singers.org) who provide financial and other assistance to singers in need.

As always not all tracks in an album is perfect but this comes pretty close. I love the way these voices do something new for old favourites.

4.0 out of 5 stars Singing for a good cause, March 1, 2007
This review is from: Society of Singers: Great Voices Great Songs (Audio CD)
GREAT VOICES GREAT SONGS, a for-charity CD, is an unusual mix of modern and much older tracks. The songs presented are jazz and pop standards, and with a couple of exceptions (the opening and closing tunes) all are nicely done.

HIGHLIGHTS:

The young-voiced Sinatra version of "Sweet Lorraine" features musicians Nat King Cole, Buddy Rich, Charlie Shavers, Johnny Hodges, Coleman Hawkins and Harry Carney.

Nineteen-year-old Peter Cincotti pleasantly sings "Ain't Misbehavin'" and then amazes with his jazz piano virtuosity.

Etta James and strings on a soulful early-'60s interpretation of "Stormy Weather."

Aretha Franklin does a majestic take on Lady Day's "God Bless The Child."

Nat King Cole and big band really nail "Don't Get Around Much Anymore."

The eight pages of liner notes include recording years and album names for all songs used here. This is a collection that's a pleasant listening experience.
