From the Back Cover

A new step in evolution is taking place. Centered in Washington, DC, where much power and information are concentrated, a new Consciousness is developing. For the new social consciousness, humans will be merely useful organs. As this new super-consciousness pursues its own goals with increasing power, it comes into conflict with the goals of those humans who cherish their own individual consciousness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking and unusual social / sexual fiction, December 10, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Sociex (Paperback)
Quite enjoyable and thought provoking, this novel is serious social commentary in a contemporary setting - not your typical flashy science fiction/fantasy adventure. Sociex is a super-consciousness force that uses sex as a lure to gain control over society. To Grunberg's credit, he doesn't waste pages on long-winded side plots or inconsequential minutia. The few sex scenes are explicit but frank and non-glamorous. The book is well written for the most part and the pacing is decent all the way to the final climax -- I read it in less than 5 hours, and I'm a slow reader. Like much science fiction it ends with the ubiquitous question, Is It Really Over? Although it could have gone further in character development, Grunberg uses interesting flashbacks to give perspective. I like his use of biblical and Shakespearean quotations to introduce several chapters, as a sort of emotional premonition of what's to come. Very interesting and highly recommended. --Dave Helden
