SOCIOLOGICAL ODYSSEY contains highly engaging, current articles that bring hot sociological topics to life for readers. Students enjoy the Adlers' balanced selection of timely readings, which cover issues and areas of interest to the general collegian, including Internet dating, the black middle class, homosexuality, the straight edge movement, welfare recipients, and children's clique behavior. In depth introductions, explanation of theory and discussion questions before each reading help guide students through the material.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for Intro Sociology classes, November 26, 2007
This review is from: Sociological Odyssey: Contemporary Readings in Introductory Sociology (Paperback)
I've just used this in my Intro Sociology classes and got great feedback from my students. They especially liked how the readings were relatively short, giving them a bite-size chunks of sociological ideas. A major problem in intro classes is that there is so much material to cover, so the brief pieces are a help. My favorite entry in it was Michael Kimmel's updating of Horace Minor's "Body Ritual Among the Nacerima." Everyone (except a few frat boys) found it hilarious. I also appreciated the (too) short piece on the lives of illegal immigrants. I would've had more on race, but there is enough variety for any prof/instructor to find good readings in her/his area to focus on. And (of course) thank you for making sure ethnography is included in discussions of methods. (It's the Adlers!).
