About the Author

James M. Henslin, who was born in Minnesota, graduated from high school and junior college in California and from college in Indiana. Awarded scholarships, he earned his Master’s and doctorate degrees in sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After this, he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health, and spent a year studying how people adjust to the suicide of a family member. His primary interests in sociology are the sociology of everyday life, deviance, and international relations. Among his numerous books is Down-to-Earth Sociology : Introductory Readings (Free Press), now in its twelfth edition. This book of readings reflects some of these sociological interests. He has also published widely in sociology journals, including Social Problems and American Journal of Sociology,

While a graduate student, Jim Henslin taught at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. After completing his doctorate, he joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology. He says, “I’ve always found the introductory course enjoyable to teach. I love to see students’ faces light up when they first glimpse the sociological perspective and begin to see how society has become an essential part of how they view the world.”

Henslin enjoys reading and fishing. His two favorite activities are writing and traveling. He especially enjoys visiting and living in other cultures, for this brings him face to face with behaviors and ways of thinking that he cannot take for granted, experiences that “make sociological principles come alive.”

Author bias is evident throughout this textbook. It's geared toward convincing readers that the purpose (not the use, the purpose) of sociology is for people to affect social change. That is the author's opinion, not an accepted fact.

On page 20, the author describes basic (pure) sociology as "analyzing some of society with no goal other than gaining knowledge". [With no goal other than] is the author's opinion. It's there to persuade the reader. It's not a phrase necessary to describe basic sociology. Why not simply define it as value-free (unbiased) research focused on gaining knowledge about society? That definition is essentially correct with no opinionated frills.

Also on page 20, a paragraph down, the author describes applied sociology as: "using sociology to solve problems. Applied sociology goes back to the *roots of sociology: As you have seen, sociologists founded the NAACP. Today's applied sociologists lack the broad vision that early sociologists had of reforming society..." [Today's applied sociologists lack the broad vision] is yet another example of this author stating his opinions as facts.

The problem with the author's statements above is that not only is the information based on his opinions, it's contradictory to what the author tells readers earlier in the chapter (see page 9). By the author's own words, sociology was suggested by August Comte, who promoted positivism - aka, using the scientific model of research to study society. No, August Comte didn't apply the method itself, but his reasoning and suggestion of positivism is the ROOT of sociology. Not activism, not applied sociology. The author is contradicting himself and the tone is very persuasive. I don't like that.

Down to Earth is a an apt title for this introductory book. The text is approachable and complimented by photos. Wish every college text was this student-friendly. The only downside is the price for a new copy: $220. College textbook prices now rival prescription drug prices.
