Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

The Socket PocketPak for Motorola is a mobile e-mail kit that allows you to use your handheld computer with your mobile phone for wireless e-mail and Internet access. This kit includes Socket's digital phone card, which connects a Pocket PC to a Motorola CDMA cell phone and allows the phone to function as a wireless modem.

The PocketPak comes with software for America Online and Microsoft Network, allowing you to connect wirelessly to the Internet and download e-mail in one easy step, thus eliminating the hassle of running two separate programs. The PocketPak also wirelessly enables Microsoft Pocket Inbox, which is included on Windows-powered Pocket PCs.

Socket's digital phone card is capable of transmitting and receiving data at up to 1 megabit per second (Mbps). The limitation in transfer speed is dependent on the wireless network--most CDMA networks currently operate at 14.4 Kbps, while most GSM networks currently operate at 9.6 Kbps. As the networks increase their data throughout, the digital phone card is capable of going as fast as the networks for now and the foreseeable future.

Check with your service provider to make sure your cell phone is data capable and that data services are available in your area or are turned on for your account. Some carriers require you turn on data services at an additional cost.

Other versions of the PocketPak are available for Sprint Touchpoint, Qualcomm, and Samsung phones.

From Digital Living Today

With Socket Communications PocketPak for Motorola, you can instantly transform your mobile phone into a wireless modem that uses a Digital Phone Card to connect your Pocket PC to the Internet, no matter where you are. Stuck in traffic? Sitting on a train? Waiting on an airport runway? With PocketPak, your mobile phone and your Pocket PC, you can send emails, download files, access your drive at work, even trade stocks and catch up on the latest sports scores, without ever worrying about a landline again. Compatible with AOL, MSN, and Pocket Inbox, as well as a variety of mobile carriers, the PocketPak is a great solution for those on the go and in need of time-sensitive Internet access.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product!!!, March 21, 2001

This review is from: Socket Communications DPC for Pocket PC's - Motorola CDMA StarTAC/Talkabout/Timeport/V. Series (Office Product)
I use this socket Compact Flash adapter with my Motorola V.8162 phone and hook it up to my Compaq iPaq and it works flawlessly. Connection dials up quickly with no problems. The software is easy to install and barely takes up any time or space on your pocket pc! I highly recommend this to anyone who wants the capability to email, instant message, trade stocks, or basically do anything you can do with a desktop computer, on the go. It doesn't drain my iPaq badly, and my phone seems to last about 2/3 of the normal talk time when i use the modem. Just make sure you pick up the Compaq compact flash jacket if you have an ipaq, otherwise this device will be useless. I have also used this socket adapter with my laptop computer via the included compact flash-to-pc card adapter. It also works flawlessly. Bottom line, this is the perfect accessory to make you fully mobile with internet access.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Compatible with All V-Series, January 28, 2002

This is not compatible with all Motorola V-Series phones. It is only compatible with the the V-8000 series of phones and not the V120. There is another cable by the same company for the V120 model though.

Although I only get 14.4kbps, it does everything I expected it to do.
