Great Technology, User Friendly, Great Support!, October 20, 2000
This review is from: Socket Communications CF Rugged DPC for Motorola CDMA StarTAC/Talkabout/Timeport/V. Series (Office Product)
On October 3, I wrote a review on the Socket Compact Flash DPC card I purchased for my Motorola Cellular phone. I was very frustrated because after a lot of effort and time I was unable to make a data connection with one of several Internet providers. Brian Thompson from Socket Communications has come to my rescue. We think we have isolated the problem and the Socket DCP is working even better than I expected! I am very impressed with the extra effort Socket Communications will take to insure customer satisfaction. I highly recommend this product! Not only is it well designed and works like advertised. There is a dedicated group at Socket that stands behind the product to insure their customers are satisfied. I would like to thank Brian Thompson and his Technical staff for all of their support and help.
All my calls to Socket have been pleasant and their tech support personal have bent over backward trying to resolve my connection problems. When you have three companies involved Socket Communications, Verizon Cellular and Concentric Networks it is really hard to determine where a connection problem lies. I had all but given up and returned the DCP card to Amazon and turned off the Mobile Web Service to my cell phone when Brian Thompson called from Socket Communication and offered his help.
The Socket tech support has been telling me all along that when Verizon merged with GTE cellular, they switched every GTE customer with Web Services over to their Mobile Web service, which included both data and web service. This resulted in much of their data being migrated, or transferred to different servers. In the process the data service, which the DCP card and cellular phone modem requires was sometimes not turned on or may even have been corrupted.
I made several calls to Verizon talking to first, second and third tier support. All of them insisted that both the data and web services were turned on. To make along story short after talking to Brian I had my Mobile Web Service reactivated so we could trouble shoot the problem I have been having further? Since I live in the Bay area I took both my cell phone and pocket PC to Sockets office in Newark, CA. Brian reinstalled the software one my Casio E115 and was able to easily connect to both of my Internet providers. The DCP card we used was from the same batch as my original two cards. The only thing that I had not tried is discontinuing the Verizon Mobile Web and reactivating it again thus making sure both services were correctly turned on.
I would suggest if you are having trouble making a data connection-using Verizon Cellular and you have had GTE Web Services activated before the merger, you do the following. First contact Verizon several times if necessary to make sure data and web services are turned on. Contact Socket Technical Support and make sure the card and setting on your computer or Pocket PC are correct. In my case we determined that Verizon data service was either not turned on or corrupted. As a last resort you might try having the Mobile Web Services turned off. In a few days call Verizon back and have them restart the service making sure both data and web services are turned on. In my case this solved my no carrier problem and the Socket DCP card works perfectly. What a great way to connect my Pocket PC to the Internet!

Socket Provides Superior Product and Support, July 2, 2001
This review is from: Socket Communications CF Rugged DPC for Motorola CDMA StarTAC/Talkabout/Timeport/V. Series (Office Product)
Because of increased travel I needed to be able to do email and web surfing using my Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC through my cell phone. Someone finally suggested Socket might have the digital phone card/cable I needed to connect to my Motorola StarTac phone. Their web site and "pre-buy" customer support were very helpful. After buying the phone card/cable, their tech support was very helpful in set-up and initial connection settings for getting connected to my ISP. Tech support knew the iPAQ and easily walked me through the necessary steps. The digital card has worked flawlessly. I can now download and send email and surf the net wherever I have a digital phone signal.

I purchased this socket modem and have been satisfied with the ease of use. It is a little slow (CDMA phones limit speed to 19.2), but it is more than adequate for remote connectivity. It works well with my Windows 2000 laptop and with my Jornada 548.
