Editorial Reviews

Review

I've always wondered how to make sock animals but have never had a go at it, this book is a perfect guide. It's full of inspiration, lots of different animals to make, octopuses, squirrels, lions, rabbits, mice and many more from all shapes and sizes of socks and some from gloves too. Its projects are split into skill categories, those for beginners and children, for intermediate level and the more experienced. There are step by step written and photographic instructions to guide you through the projects. There is also a section at the front telling you what supplies you will need and showing a few different stitches. It also gives you a few tips for making the projects in the book. Now you have something to do with all those mysterious odd socks that appear in the washing! (The Sewing Directory, july 12, 2010 )

Socks Appeal author, Brenna Maloney, is a former Washington Post editor. Assigned to cover the recession and housing crises that was brewing in 2008, Maloney started making sock animals for her children as a stress reducer. Maloney found that the more traumatic her job got, the more creating a new sock animal each night seemed to help. Maloney's wit and candor in how she writes the instructions is hilarious. (Publishers Weekly )

Did your washing machine eat one of your favorite striped kneesocks, leaving you with a lonely orphan? Maloney has a plan for that sad sock. Perhaps there's a penguin, hamster, or octopus inside that yearns to be free, and with a few snips and some simple sewing, you can make it so. Her collection takes the classic idea of the sock monkey and makes it into something new using basic techniques and imagination. Maloney's style is very informal-it's like reading the inner monolog of a craft blogger-and this will either charm you or distract you, depending on your tolerance for quirk and personal stories. Most of the projects are easy enough for (supervised) children, but adults who like a little whimsy won't be disappointed, either. (Library Journal )

If you love these adorable sock penguins, then check out the entire collection of irresistibly sweet sock critters. Turn your favorite socks into adorable bunnies, kittens, hamsters, turtles, lions and more! Included are step-by-step photos for picture perfect results. Did your dryer eat a brand new sock? No worries - stray singles can now become the perfect gift in just an hour. (Crafts n Things, 12/1/10 )

5.0 out of 5 stars Appealing Socks Appeal August 11, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
At the risk of thrusting a fluffy pink arrow through my he-manliness, I feel compelled to reveal the utility of Maloney's Socks Appeal. I bought it as a gift for a pregnant neighbor, and yet soon found myself flipping through the pages instead. Suddenly a realization: I can do this. I can make a sock critter for my own kin (tears of love from my daughter, massive bonus points from my wife, a win win!). And so I tackled "the hamster," the little cutie on the cover (minus the argyle). Before you can say Renaissance man my daughter had a new favorite lovely. And through no skill of my own; the instructions in Socks Appeal are smartly illustrated--there's a photo accompanying every move (take note, cookbooks). If you want to get your hubby man involved in making some arts and crafts for the kids, this is the book to do it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adorable book with great kid-friendly projects August 10, 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Who knew you could make so many different types of stuffed toys from socks? In this whimsical, lavishly photographed craft book, Brenna Maloney comes up with everything from hamsters to mermaids and jellyfish, all fashioned from ordinary socks.

The text is clear and concise, with detailed, step-by-step directions and gorgeous color photographs by Chuck Kennedy, to help you keep your project on track from start to finish, even if you're only a novice at sewing. Best of all, the book is divided into sections, offering easy projects the kids can do as well as more challenging ones for the adults.

Fun rainy-day reading for families, and a great gift for those crafty types on your list!
