4.0 out of 5 stars Find the old edition of this book!
Socks is a great book, but it's terrible that the publisher threw out the great illustrations by Beatrice Darwin in favor of some Saturday-morning-cartoon "illustrations" that turn Socks into an anthropomorphic "character," instead of a cat.

Darwin's great pictures capture the personality of Socks in a way that stuck with me for 25 years. Any...

3.0 out of 5 stars Cat takes back seat to baby in this short, simple tale
Mr. and Mrs. Bricker, a young, childless couple, choose to add a kitten, which they name Socks, to their family. With plenty of food and affection, the cat thrives. But then something terrible happens, Marilyn Bricker gives birth to a baby boy named Charles William. When baby makes four, all seems swell with the Cleaver-like family, but the kitty feels neglected. Charles...

5.0 out of 5 stars Socks, December 18, 2000
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Socks (Paperback)
This book is about a gray kitten with white paws named Socks. Socks is bought by a couple living in a small house. The couple decided to have a baby. The baby was receiving all of the attention Socks normally received. Socks decided to leave the house. Running away from home caused Socks to get in a fight with another cat in the neighborhood. Socks returned home needing attention for his injuries. The couple saw the cuts and sores on Socks. Socks received lots of loving care and a nice comfortable bed to sleep in. There is a happy ending to the story. You'll need to read the book to find out the ending. I recommed this book for readers who love animals. I enjoy reading about any kind of animal. Animals add more excitement and comedy to a story.

This review is from: Socks (Paperback)
Socks is a cat who has a great family but than his family has a baby . So its all about how the cat acts and playes with the baby.Socks gets jealous of the new baby, but at the end you see how Socks acts with the baby as they get older.I thought this was one of Bevely Cleary's best books. This book is great for middle-school aged kids. This book made me laugh a lot and it inspired me to read more Bevely Cleary books.

I love Beverly Cleary's books, and I think this may be one of her best. It's very intriguing and hard to put down. I don't like many books, but I loved this one. It has a great plot, interesting characters, and a GREAT ending. I would recommed this book to anybody, even those who don't like books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Meow!, November 10, 2001
This review is from: Socks (Paperback)
This may be my favorite Beverly Cleary book, which is saying a lot because I'm one huge fan of Henry and Ramona.

It takes a lot of creativity and perspective to write a book entirely from the point of view of a cat, and have it come across as real and touching, not as schlock.

Socks the book and Socks the cat are well worth reading again and again, especially the hilarious final chapter.

Beverly Cleary tells the charming story of a cat whose position as the beloved center of the family is upset by the arrival of a new baby. Her refusal to anthropomorphize the cat added to my appreciation of this book immensely. The theme of pet jealousy was particularly relevant for me just now since my wife and I have four cats and we are also expecting our first child.

I have an old edition and I agree with the reviewers who prefer the original illustrations by Beatrice Darwin. This is the first story I have read to my as-yet-unborn son. I look forward to reading it with him again one day.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really good book for cat lovers!, January 19, 1998
This review is from: Socks (Paperback)
Debbie and her brother, George, go out in the city with a box of kittens. On the box, it said 25 cents per kitten. Three bratty children wanted to keep Debbie's favorite kitten, but Debbie hid him in the mailbox. Then the mailman came and let Socks out. The Brickers bought the kitten and loved him for year. Then Mrs. Bricker gets a new pet...a baby! They put Socks in the basement. The baby bothers the kitten for a long time. Then Socks gets to know the baby and they become best friends.

I am in my mid 30s now, and it is still one of the most memorable books that I ever read as a kid. *smile* I grew up to be a big cat lover, and I accredit that to Socks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny book!, June 7, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Socks (Paperback)
Imagine that you are a cat that is really jealous of your family. This book is called "Socks". I like this book because it is funny and cute. Socks is a tabby cat that is jealous and gets into trouble. Charles William is a cute and funny baby. The problem in the story is that Socks is jealous of Charles William because Charles William gets more attention than Socks. The solution is that Charles William and Socks become friends. Charles William was throwing cotton balls out of his crib and Socks was catching them and ripping them up. This was a game they had fun playing. I recommend this book to people who like cute books. I think you should read this book.
