How does this work?
Clicking the “Test drive now” button launches a copy of this app on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), a web service that provides on-demand compute capacity in the cloud for developers. When you interact with the simulated phone using your mouse and keyboard, we send those inputs over the Internet to the app running on Amazon EC2 — just like your mobile device would send a finger tap to the app. Our servers then send the video and audio output from the app back to your computer. All this happens in real time, allowing you to explore the features of the app as if it were running on your mobile device.

Product Description
Spelling Bee
Spelling Bee
Hone your spelling chops with thousands of words

Love it or hate it, spelling is here to stay. Embrace this reality and become a better speller with Spelling Bee, an easy-to-use educational app for your Android device.

Spelling Bee is an ideal study aid for children, but it's also great for anyone who wants to improve their spelling skills. It features a database of more than 2,300 English words--along with definitions and clear audio clips of each word's pronunciation--so you can expand your knowledge base quickly and easily.

Practice Makes Perfect

As any seasoned competitor knows, you can't just walk into a spelling bee cold and expect to win. You have to prepare--and that means studying as many words as you possibly can, learning definitions and pronunciations as you memorize each word.

The app's Study mode gives you that opportunity, offering a no-pressure review of thousands of words. Each entry reveals the correct spelling of a single word and its definition. You can also touch an onscreen audio prompt to hear the word being spoken aloud.

Test Yourself

When you're ready, head to Spelling Bee mode for a virtual bee. Touch the onscreen prompt to hear a word spoken aloud, then type the word into a text box. You'll know immediately whether you got it correct--and if you didn't, the app will helpfully reveal the correct spelling so you can see your mistake.

Choose from four difficulty levels (Beginner, Easy, Medium, or Hard) and decide how many words you'd like to spell in a challenge (five, 10, or 20). If you want to improve your speed, select the Timer option; this keeps track of how long it takes you to complete a quiz.

The makers of Spelling Bee are busy (yes, you guessed it: busy like bees) adding more words all the time, so you'll always find new challenges. Have fun and get spelling!

My 5 year old is rather advanced, so I thought this would be a fun app for her. The setting got changed to hard, but she was still doing quite well with minimal help. She would listen to the word, tell me what she thought it said, then I'd ask her the definition to make sure she was saying the right word. Imagine my surprise when she said, "Randy! I can spell that!" I thought surely she had misheard the word (since the voice pronouncing the words is horrendous), but alas she had not, as I found out when I asked her the definition. She said something to the effect of "Sexually aroused or excited. Wanting to have sex." WHAT?!? My daughter asks questions about the definitions she reads if she doesn't know the words, so this led to my FIVE YEAR OLD asking me, "Mommy, what is sex?" Thank you, Spelling Bee app developers, for educating my daughter about way too mature topics.

Before I get reamed for not being cautious, I'm a very careful mother when it comes to what I expose my children to, but I thought I was safe letting her use a spelling bee app. I had gone through several "study" sessions on the hard setting to make sure there was nothing inappropriate, but there's no way to view all the words without a large investment of time to be able to screen them beforehand.

Perhaps a revision to this app needs to be made, so other children aren't exposed to these kinds of words.

3.0 out of 5 stars Almost exactly what you would expect! June 5, 2012
Verified Purchase
Almost exactly what you would expect from a spelling game. I would have rated higher if all the audio pronounciations were high quality. For example I just did a test and 6 of the 10 words had a decent quality audio, and the other 4 sounded muffled and like someone was using a voice modulator.

This app is not just for kids; anyone who wants to improve their vocabulary and spelling skills can benefit. It is published by Socratica, a developer of educational quiz apps such as Periodic Table, 50 States and US Presidents.

There are two modes: Study, which merely displays words along with a definition and pronunciation, and Spelling Bee, which is the actual test. You can choose a test of 5, 10 or 20 words, one of four difficulties, and whether the timer is shown; the timer does not affect your final score and there is no time limit.

On the hard difficulty level, the app included such words as "placatory", "omniscience", "defenestration", "tulle" and "supererogation". The easy level included "thing", "mother", "light", "given" and "water".

Overall, the pronunciation and definition are usually sufficient to figure out what word I should be typing. In one case, however, it gave "generally unpleasant currents of air that come into a place" as the clue, with the word spoken sounding like "drafts", but the spelling it was looking for was "draughts", which would be the British form. It marked me incorrect for using the American form, "drafts".

The app also can't make up its mind whether to use a robotic text-to-speech voice, or a more realistic recorded voice. Making the "speak" button larger would be nice, as it's rather small and hard to press on my tablet. [EDIT: I discovered that if you press the speak button too quickly after a word loads, it will use the robot voice. If you wait a few seconds before pressing it, you get the human voice. I've tested this and it appears to be quite consistent.]

It is a rather plain-looking app, but that's really a good thing; you really don't want flashing lights and distracting sound effects when you're trying to learn.

4.0 out of 5 stars good ap June 5, 2012

This app is good but still does need some tweaking. The audio at times is muffled and hard to understand. and There were a few times I spelled the word correctly and was told I was not correct. Overall the app is easy and fun to use. It's also a good challenge for those of you who want to increase your spelling ability. I gave it 4 stars in would give it 5 if they fix the voice thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Much better than I thought... June 5, 2012

Glad I tried it in spite of the bad reviews. Thought it would only be good for kids but was shocked when "hard" level was really hard. Medium were commonly misspelled words. I like the optional timer feature. Nice little daily drill on the train to work.

4.0 out of 5 stars a good thing, but needs some work still. June 5, 2012

played around with the app for a bit. A great concept & something that more and more people are going to be neede
ing with the increasing cuts to education and our idiotic enslavement to the auto-check electronic dictionary.

I probably would have only given this app 3 stars, bur for my love of the concept, and to counteract the single star ratings given by those who think knowing how to spell something properly is outdated. (if you dont know how to spell something, how are you going to look it up in the dictionary when its not in the standard word processor program spell checker?)

I love that you can change what level you are studying, and select a 5, 10, or 20 question quiz. but they use different people to say some of the words and some of the ladies have accents that make them hard to understand or sound mispronounced. (SO NEEDS TO BE FIXED!!!!)

Not really a word base for the younger kids, depending on their reading level, the easy might go as young as second grade. but the program isnt some cutesy game, its an actual study app that is "cute".
