The design of the machine is very modern and looks great in the kitchen!

After barely a few seconds of attempting to carbonate, the bottle begins leaking massive amounts of air and making a horrifically loud squealing noise.

The LED readout makes it very easy for you to control the intensity of carbonation in your soda water.

We bought our Soda Stream Source kit about four months ago and it has been in constant use since. For the record the wife bought the soda stream has a gift for me. She bought it through Amazon but I cannot claim it has an Amazon Verified Purchase. With the onset of a Houston summer this has become a critical household appliance. In the months we have had the Soda Stream carbonated water system we have stopped buying all forms of carbonated soft drinks. To say the least we are happy, satisfied customers and are looking forward to using our soda stream for as long as it will last.

What will follow will be a fairly detailed analysis of this product and for those of you seeking a bottom line: we are happy customers glad to have this product with just enough concerns to withhold the fifth star.

Things We like about the Soda Stream Soda Maker

Beginning at the beginning, the Soda Stream Soda Maker comes out-of-the-box and goes into full function in a matter of moments. It is very easy to use. I do advise you adhere strictly to the instructions but as long as you do so your result will be exactly as advertised. The LED readout makes it very easy for you to control the intensity of carbonation in your soda water. For once a new appliance is as easy to use as the manufacturer would have you believe.

As already mentioned this product has ended our need to haul soft drinks from the grocery. I will discuss per unit costs below but it's a lot less weight in groceries to carry around. Plus we're not throwing out liter bottles or soda cans but rather continue to reuse our soda stream bottles.

Verified Purchase
Very nice product for those who like carbonated drinks. All in, I'm not sure how much money you're actually saving (depends on where you live) compared to buying soda or carbonated water. However, its much more convenient, and more environmentally friendly. Its also a fun product to use, and I personally get some simple pleasure from fizzing up my water in the morning.

So the Source model is their new base model as of the 11/2012. It has this lock in mechanism versus prior models which require you to twist in your bottle, which is actually kind of nice. The lock-in system allows you to more easily snap in the bottle. Also, its a much nicer looking product in my view. The white one, which is what I purchased, has a style design similar to Apple products. Something that you can feel good sitting on your kitchen counter. The source also has a LED indicator that lets you know how much fizz to add to achieve various levels of carbonation. This is a little gimmicky but does look cool.

So far pretty happy with the product. I do wish their CO2 refill containers are cheaper. I believe a refill is 20 dollars at my local Bed Bath and Beyond. Yes they charge pretty high prices for re-fills and things like flavor units. This is no different from many companies that sell you the machine for little or no margin, and make it up on the accessories (ex: printers and ink cartriges, razors and blades, etc).

The design of the "source" model is by far the best of any sodastream machine I've seen yet. In terms of ease of use. Way easier and less messy than the kind you screw into place, with this the carbonating bottles just snap into place like they're supposed to. The problem with it is that there's almost no consistency is results. What constitutes as "high fizz" with one batch of soda can be markedly different from the next batch applying the same amount of fizz. Some soda mix flavors mix perfectly on their own. Others seem to sink at the bottom, meaning you'll have a weak taste at the top of the bottle but a strong taste at the bottom. And it's not like you can just shake it. Well you can, but not if you plan on actually drinking yoru fresh soda any time soon.

I'm not completely unhappy with it. I won't be returning it. But I'm not blown away happy with my purchase either.

Another thing that should be noted is that I don't see how cost effective this machine is. I'm not one to crunch numbers, but the co2 canister is small and costs about $30. $15 to refill it at an authorized retailer. Now there are workarounds so that you can get refills from regular co2 tanks for much cheaper, but they aren't food grade CO2 and places that refill paintball guns use unfiltered, dirty, and poor tasting co2. I'll pay the extra cash and go to an exchange location. The flavor syrups cost $7-$10. What kind of soda you drink and how much will determine how much you'll save in the end, but this machine is not cheap.

I got mine because I do drink a nice amount of soda and carbonated water so for me it's simply a convenience/luxury. I want fresh soda on demand and now I have it. I don't know how cost effective it is you'll just have to do the math yourself if that's your aim.

Assertions you will save money buying this momentarily aside, this does what it supposed to do. It carbonates water.

It does nothing more. In fact, if you carbonate other than water, you void any warranty. Apparently, this is predicated on risks of damaging the Sodastream.

Some say, and indicate it to be based on experience, you also risk making a huge mess of an area of your home, if you carbonate other than water. This is said to be because other liquids foam wildly, when the CO2 is introduced to the bottle and is, likely, why Sodastream directs you to add flavors after the carbonation process is complete.

I bought this with the intention of carbonating wine, apple juice and other liquids. Only after buying this was I able to learn it was intended ONLY for carbonating water.

This Sodastream is very unlikely to save you money, for the reasons set out below.

To operate this, you MUST use Sodastream's proprietary system water bottles. It will not work with other bottles.

The kit I bought came with a single bottle. To insure there was a bottle of cold water on hand when the one ran out, I had to buy more. The bottles, which are just "plastic," run around twenty dollars for a two pack.

You cannot clean the bottles using a dishwasher, or by using hot, soapy water. If you do, Sodastream recommends they be discarded, as unsafe.

You cannot refill Sodastream CO2 tanks. The proprietary Sodastream system disallows this (see notes, below). Local suppliers cannot re-fill them. You HAVE TO exchange the empty CO2 cartridges, at a costs of about twenty dollars each.

If you were filling larger, non-proprietary tank with CO2, it would cost you only around three to five dollars.
