A remarkable book.
"Soeharto, the life and legacy of Indonesia's second President" provides a true insight view into the history of Indonesia, and the inner workings/alignment of Indonesian culture and politics. It shows President Soeharto's not only as a statesman and politician, but also as a person and individual. The book gives a balanced view of the President's life, his accomplishments and legacy.

An interesting anecdote is that the author was not afraid to criticize President Soeharto during his time in office for policies she did not agree with (see Times), but after some distance of time she seems to also want to talk about the laudable aspects of the Soeharto administration. The same integrity and strong moral grounding of the author, can (apparently) not be found in a number of people who approached the administration for favors and now deny and demonize (and seek new favors from the new political class - is this the real Indonesian dilemma?)

This book gives us an insightful ying and yang view of the president's administration. The author's family background and direct access to President Soeharto make this book a real gem and historical treasure trove. As it happened, this appears to be the last real biography of President Soeharto, written with his consent and cooperation. Alone this makes it a historical book from immense value for historians and political researchers alike.
A fascinating, must read for everybody interested in Indonesian history and an important chapter in its history.
Highly recommended.
